{"117171":{"#nid":"117171","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Students Re-Conceive Community Service Council","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EAlready devoting much of her time to service at Tech while\nat the Institute, fourth-year environmental engineering undergraduate Emma\nBones decided it was time to revive a dormant organizational arm that once\nserved Tech\u2019s campus.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Community Service Council (CSC), active from 2007-09, has\nre-launched with a new group of students and a greater focus on serving the\nentire Tech community. The group aims to help student service organizations\noperate better and to make service opportunities easier to access.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cWe did outreach to organizations that we\u2019ll support to see\nwhat their challenges or barriers to service are right now, and how we can help,\u201d\nsaid Bones, chair of the CSC. \u201cWe also want to integrate more with faculty,\nstaff and the administration.\u201d The CSC has already developed an \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/service.gatech.edu\/plugins\/content\/index.php?id=83\u0022\u003Eonline service\ncalendar\u003C\/a\u003E that aggregates the volunteer opportunities organized by various\ngroups. The Council is also in the process of developing a database that will\nenable users to search for service opportunities based on interest or group.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EWorking with the Office of Community Service in the Division\nof Student Affairs, the CSC hopes to further integrate service \u2014 the second\nhalf of the Institute\u2019s \u201cprogress and service\u201d motto \u2014 into all aspects of\nGeorgia Tech.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThere\u2019s been a big push on service learning and it\u2019s\nsomething students really want,\u201d Bones said. Sarah Perkins, community service coordinator in the\nOffice of Community Service, works with faculty members interested in\nincorporating service into their curriculum, helping them design courses in\nline with their goals.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EBones also hopes that faculty and staff will participate in\nthe many service projects offered by student organizations.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cStudents always say they would love faculty to join them.\nWe hope they\u2019ll join students, bring their families out and increase that interaction,\u201d\nBones said.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Council builds on an already strong legacy of service at\nTech, which was named to the 2012 President\u2019s Higher Education Community\nService Honor Roll.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThough half of the spring semester has passed, there are\nstill many opportunities for student, faculty and staff involvement before the\nterm comes to a close, including \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/gttbd.org\/\u0022\u003ETech\nBeautification Day\u003C\/a\u003E and \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/relay.gatech.edu\u0022\u003ERelay For Life\u003C\/a\u003E\non Saturday, March 31, and \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.forthekids.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EDance\nMarathon\u003C\/a\u003E on Friday, April 13.
