These pathologies include osteonecrosis, osteoarthritis and vaso-occlusive infarct. The mechanism underlying these structural changes in sickle bone is not fully understood. Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) may function as pericytes and play an important role in regulating vascular morphogenesis.
