The public-private partnership between Emory University and Georgia Institute of Technology, the state's only two member schools of the prestigious Association of American Universities, demonstrates an emerging trend in higher education. These kinds of partnerships allow schools to focus on individual core strengths and collaborate with institutions to maximize resources and expertise. For example, The Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering, a joint department created by Emory's School of Medicine and the Georgia Tech’s College of Engineering, consistently ranks No. 2 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.
The Emory-Tech partnership offers both graduate and undergraduate degree programs, including PhD and MD programs. For undergrads, a dual-degree program allows students to earn both a B.A. or B.S. degree from Emory College of Arts and Sciences and a B.S. degree in engineering from Georgia Tech. Classes are paid through the student's home institution and the credit taken at a partnering school is transferred back as resident credit.
Cross-registration is open only to junior, senior and graduate students. Students may only take courses at Emory that are not offered at Tech during the specific term for which they’re registering. Full instructions for cross-registration are available from the Office of the Registrar; Emory also makes its cross-registration rules available online.
Students may choose from a variety of Emory courses on topics such as global health, religion, photography or drama, and can peruse Emory’s course catalog online. Academic advisors can assist students in determining which courses qualify and how cross-registration would fit into their academic timelines.
