{"243511":{"#nid":"243511","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Lumina Taps Rich DeMillo among Inaugural Fellows","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003ELumina Foundation recently appointed Distinguished Professor \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.luminafoundation.org\/about_us\/lumina_fellows_program\/demillo.html\u0022\u003ERich DeMillo\u003C\/a\u003E, director of the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/c21u.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ECenter for 21st Century Universities (C21U)\u003C\/a\u003E at Georgia Tech, as one of its inaugural Lumina Fellows. \u0026nbsp;Lumina Foundation is an independent, private foundation committed to designing and building a more accessible, responsive and accountable higher education system.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAs one of four Lumina Fellows, DeMillo will help the foundation achieve some of the objectives outlined in its \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.luminafoundation.org\/goal_2025.html\u0022\u003E2013 to 2016 Strategic Plan\u003C\/a\u003E. Specifically, they will focus on the foundation\u2019s Goal 2025: to increase the proportion of Americans with high-quality college degrees, certificates and credentials to 60 percent by 2025.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cIt\u0027s a great honor to be selected by Lumina for this important role,\u201d DeMillo said. \u201cReaching Lumina\u0027s 2025 goal is a challenge for all of us in higher education, and it will take innovation on a large scale to be successful. I look at my role as painting futures for colleges and universities. The alternative is to be left behind as the rest of society figures out how to meet the challenge.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAs a former dean of the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ECollege of Computing\u003C\/a\u003E at Georgia Tech, DeMillo founded C21U in 2011 and continues to direct this \u201cliving laboratory\u201d for fundamental change in higher education. Also as chair of the Provost\u2019s Council for Educational Technology, DeMillo is responsible for educational technology innovation on the Georgia Tech campus. He is a frequent speaker on higher education and the author of \u003Cem\u003EAbelard to Apple: The Fate of American Colleges and Universities\u003C\/em\u003E, published in 2011 by MIT Press.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EDeMillo joins three other thought leaders as the first group of Lumina Fellows for an initial two-year appointment.
