280181 news 1393867469 1475896558 As media has developed and changed, conventions of narrative content and format have kept pace, underlining that narrative is not isolated but is intrinsic to the cultural landscape as it is shaped by and shapes emerging technologies. Madej's talk presents narrative as material culture. It begins with what is perhaps the oldest written story on earth, the Epic of Gilgamesh,  looks at the evolution of Egyptian hieroglyphics and compares them to today's websites and the evolution of computer communciation. A quick run through Athenian vase narratives, medieval church friezes, renaissance puppetry plays, baroque operas, and modern film, brings the talk to today's interactive digital stories. The talk concludes with a narrative project from an advanced narrative class at Vancouver's Center for Digital Media in which students used social media to construct a hypermedia sequel to the Romeo and Juliet story.
