Georgia Tech’s CheckDroid Wins 2014 Startup Madness Competition

Caught up in the spirit of March Madness, 14 teams of college entrepreneurs faced off in bracket-style competition for Startup Madness last week at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, but only one team emerged victorious: CheckDroid from Georgia Tech’s School of Computer Science.

CheckDroid is a service designed to help Android-focused developers test and identify issues with their applications across multiple devices. The program saves considerable time for developers by enabling them to address problems by targeting devices within their user demographics.

Team members include Shauvik Roy Choudhary, Tyler Dutton, Karan Jhurani, Chad Lane and David Mashburn.

Choudhary, the team’s leader, is a Ph.D. candidate in Professor Alex Orso’s research group working on developing techniques to improve testing of web and mobile applications. He received the TI:GER fellowship from Georgia Tech’s Scheller College of Business. Through this program, he teamed with MBA and JD students to commercialize the technology developed in his lab.

As the grand prize winner, the CheckDroid team earned a pitch trip to Silicon Valley to visit with venture capitalist firm Kleiner Perkins as well as a nine-month residency at Raleigh’s new living and learning entrepreneurship initiative, the ThinkHouse.

The college entrepreneurs represented eight ACC schools, and N.C. State’s Poole College of Management hosted the fourth annual event. CheckDroid of Georgia Tech was the only team from the field of computer science.
