{"41226":{"#nid":"41226","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Campus-Wide Conversation","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003ETech\u0027s vice provost of Academic Diversity opened dialogue to faculty, staff and students at the Institute\u0027s inaugural Diversity Symposium last week. \u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EAccording to the vice provost\u0027s office, roughly 180 participants attended the half-day forum, held Sept. 14 at the Global Conference and Learning Center from\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n11 a.m. to 2 p.m. \n\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EPresident Bud Peterson welcomed the attendees, relating the discussion of academic diversity to the strategic planning process currently under way. He recounted Tech\u0027s history as the first major institution in the South to peacefully integrate in 1961, as well as Tech\u0027s legacy of producing African-American engineering undergraduate and graduate degrees.\n\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0022Diversity should be included in everything we do,\u0022 he said. \u0022My goal is that the Instiute arrives at a place where the Office of Academic Diversity is no longer needed.\u0022\n\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EGuest panelists attending the forum were Gertrude Fraser, vice provost for Faculty Advancement for the University of Virginia in Charlottesville;
