{"456681":{"#nid":"456681","#data":{"type":"news","title":"A Summer of STEM learning for K-12 students","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp class=\u0022p1\u0022\u003EThis summer, hundreds of K-12 students\u0026nbsp;descended upon\u0026nbsp;the Georgia Tech\u0026nbsp;campus to participate in the summer enrichment opportunities offered by \u003Ca class=\u0022links\u0022 title=\u0022CEISMC\u0022 href=\u0022http:\/\/www.ceismc.gatech.edu\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ECEISMC (Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics, and Computing)\u003C\/a\u003E.\u0026nbsp;A unique department within the institute, CEISMC\u2019s\u0026nbsp;overarching goals are\u0026nbsp;to\u0026nbsp;provide\u0026nbsp;K-12 students in Georgia\u0026nbsp;with premier learning opportunities in\u0026nbsp;science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) as they seek their place in the modern world.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p1\u0022\u003E\u003Ca class=\u0022links\u0022 title=\u0022GoSTEM\u0022 href=\u0022http:\/\/gostem.gatech.edu\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EGeorgia Tech\u2019s\u0026nbsp;GoSTEM\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;program\u0026nbsp;is coordinated by CEISMC, in collaboration with the Gwinnett County Public Schools, the Office of Institute Diversity at Georgia Tech, and local community organizations.\u0026nbsp;GoSTEM\u2019s\u0026nbsp;primary\u0026nbsp;mission is to strengthen the pipeline of Latino K-12 students into post-secondary STEM education.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp; For\u0026nbsp;each of\u0026nbsp;the last two years,\u0026nbsp;in partnership with\u0026nbsp;ProjectGrad\u0026nbsp;USA and\u0026nbsp;ProjectGrad\u0026nbsp;Atlanta, GoSTEM\u0026nbsp;has\u0026nbsp;provided\u0026nbsp;opportunities for 24\u0026nbsp;underrepresented\u0026nbsp;students\u0026nbsp;per year\u0026nbsp;from Gwinnett County Public Schools and Atlanta Public Schools to participate in\u0026nbsp;a\u0026nbsp;two-week Pursuing Urban Sustainability at Home (PUSH) summer institute.\u0026nbsp;Through this institute, students\u0026nbsp;became\u0026nbsp;knowledgeable\u0026nbsp;about\u0026nbsp;local issues of urban sustainability and\u0026nbsp;technology, while\u0026nbsp;developing\u0026nbsp;leadership\u0026nbsp;skills. At the conclusion of the program, students\u0026nbsp;designed and built\u0026nbsp;a gingerbread prototype of a sustainable\u0026nbsp;house\u0026nbsp;which\u0026nbsp;was\u0026nbsp;presented during a showcase to parents and community members.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p1\u0022\u003EAlso during\u0026nbsp;the\u0026nbsp;summer\u0026nbsp;of 2015,\u0026nbsp;the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca class=\u0022links\u0022 title=\u0022GIFT\u0022 href=\u0022http:\/\/www.ceismc.gatech.edu\/gift\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EGeorgia Intern-Fellowships for Teachers (GIFT)\u003C\/a\u003E, and its high school student researchers program,\u0026nbsp;Research, Experiment, Analyze and Learn (R.E.A.L.)\u0026nbsp;provided opportunities for 60\u0026nbsp;teachers\u0026nbsp;and 45 students to gain first hand, in-depth\u0026nbsp;experiences\u0026nbsp;in\u0026nbsp;STEM fields.\u0026nbsp; Through placements in\u0026nbsp;cutting edge research\u0026nbsp;laboratories and\u0026nbsp;businesses throughout Georgia, teachers and students spent four to seven weeks\u0026nbsp;gaining insight\u0026nbsp;about\u0026nbsp;engineering and research concepts not readily available\u0026nbsp;in\u0026nbsp;K-12 settings.\u0026nbsp; Initiated by CEISMC in 1991,\u0026nbsp;GIFT averages 60 to 75 teacher placements\u0026nbsp;per\u0026nbsp;summer in STEM internships.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;R.E.A.L.,\u0026nbsp;in its 11th\u0026nbsp;year, averages\u0026nbsp;30 to 35 high school student placements\u0026nbsp;in research labs on\u0026nbsp;the Georgia Tech\u0026nbsp;campus.\u0026nbsp;Select high school students\u0026nbsp;in more rural areas of Georgia\u0026nbsp;also intern in businesses, gaining STEM experience through community based programs.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p1\u0022\u003EStudents from neighboring Metro Atlanta communities were also able to participate in\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca class=\u0022links\u0022 title=\u0022CEISMC PEAKS\u0022 href=\u0022https:\/\/www.ceismc.gatech.edu\/ceismc-summer-peaks\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ECEISMC\u2019s\u0026nbsp;summer P.E.A.K.S.\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;program (Programs for Enrichment and\u0026nbsp;Accelerated Knowledge in STEM).\u0026nbsp;During the\u0026nbsp;summer\u0026nbsp;of 2015,\u0026nbsp;406\u0026nbsp;students from middle schools and\u0026nbsp;186\u0026nbsp;from high schools enrolled in these\u0026nbsp;hands-on, interactive learning experiences\u0026nbsp;in STEM\u0026nbsp;on the Georgia Tech campus.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p1\u0022\u003ESo,\u0026nbsp;learning was in the air this summer in Midtown, and our university\u2019s streets were full of excited\u0026nbsp;K-12 students exploring everything from the science of roller coasters,\u0026nbsp;to Wall Street on Peachtree,\u0026nbsp;to\u0026nbsp;underwater robots and\u0026nbsp;current sustainability challenges in Atlanta.\u0026nbsp; Georgia Tech celebrates learning for students of all ages!
