{"511781":{"#nid":"511781","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Business Community Luncheon","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EWith interest in building upon a collaborative Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) internship partnership with the Georgia Tech Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics and Computing (CEISMC), approximately thirty school and business leaders participated in the Griffin-Spalding Community Business Community Luncheon hosted by AMP-IT-UP on November 18, 2015 at the Griffin-Spalding County Schools Learning Center. Included among attendees were school leaders, Superintendent of Schools Jim Smith, Deputy Superintendent Sharlene Patterson, Director of Curriculum Ashley Crawford, and Director of Career, Technical, Agricultural Education Dr. Laura Ergle. Area businesses and community partners with representatives in attendance included Caterpillar, Inc., Candler Field Museum, UGA Griffin, Gordon College, Spalding Regional Hospital, 1888 Mills, and Sumika Polymers, to name a few.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe purpose of the meeting was to discuss ways to develop a sustainable process to continue summer STEM internships for Griffin-Spalding teachers and students beyond the district\u2019s current AMP-IT-UP partnership. Attendees heard from special guests from Coffee County including business leader and HR Director for PCC Airfoils Scott Smith, Coffee County Schools Workforce Development Director Linda Cribbs and Coffee County Schools Career, Technical, Agricultural Education Director Brad Reiner. Now in its third year, Coffee County Schools was among the first in the state to implement a locally based summer STEM Internship Program to provide hands-on internships for local students. During summer 2015, thirty-seven students interned in twenty-four Coffee County area businesses.
