The program is available to all undergraduates considering a career in elementary, middle, and high school education.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe program started with a single internship in the summer of 2013 at Centennial Academy (formerly Centennial Place Elementary) in the Atlanta Public Schools (APS) system, and has grown to 11 opportunities. The program now also spans all three semesters and includes Centennial Academy and Grady High School in APS, Holy Innocents\u2019 Episcopal School (HIES), KIPP Atlanta Collegiate, Duke Talent Identification Program, CEISMC Pathways, Breakthrough Atlanta, and Horizons@GT.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAdditionally, Pre-Teaching and the Office of International Education (OIE) have partnered to offer the first-ever Georgia Tech pre-teaching global internship opportunity \u2014 First Code Academy in Hong Kong and Singapore \u2014 starting this summer, and they are also developing an additional opportunity this summer in Peru. \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThe best way to learn about teaching is to teach,\u201d said Pre-Teaching and Pre-Law Advisor Susan Belmonte of the Center for Career Discovery and Development.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe internships are paid for an entire semester. Interns qualify for audit credit hours, receive transcript designation, and work\u0026nbsp;directly with a mentor teacher and build\u0026nbsp;teaching skills\u0026nbsp;throughout the term. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EBy the fall of 2016, there will be 14 internship spots available across the year. Currently, five students are interning from multiple disciplines; one is in his second term.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThe\u0026nbsp;most important\u0026nbsp;development has been the financial commitments from schools themselves to help the program grow. HIES, KIPP, and, as of Fall 2016, Fulton County Schools, are providing their own monies to support our students,\u201d said Belmonte.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThe other opportunities are partnerships with existing programs within and outside of Tech,\u0022 she continued. \u201cThe partnerships with APS schools also tie directly into the APS Scholars@Georgia Tech program by bringing our talented students into APS schools to help children in the\u0026nbsp;system become our future undergraduates.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EGlobal Internships Available\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EFirst Code Academy (FCA), with its base in Hong Kong and Singapore, reached out to the Office of International Education (OIE) because it wanted to recruit interns from Georgia Tech.\u0026nbsp;FCA is the first \u2014 and leading \u2014 education company that offers mobile app and programing development courses for pre-university students in Asia. FCA wants students who are passionate about software engineering, have experience in tutoring pre-teens or teens (in any subject), and have an entrepreneurial mindset.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAdditionally, Tech\u2019s Global Internship Program is working to develop internships with Centro Cultural Peruano Norteamericano in Arequipa, Peru, particularly\u0026nbsp;for Pre-Teaching, Applied Language and Intercultural Studies, International Affairs, and International Affairs and Modern Languages students \u2014 although all majors will be able to apply. These internships will focus on teaching English as a second language to children, teenagers, and adults. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThe Global Internship Program staff is excited to work with the Pre-Teaching Program to develop overseas internship options that provide our students the chance to teach STEM subjects as well as English language,\u201d said Jennifer Evanuik Baird, director, Global Internship Program and International Plan.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0022As U.S. K-12 classrooms become more diverse, it is vitally important for future teachers to be able to work effectively with different populations, be creative and resourceful problem-solvers, and be sensitive to different cultures.\u0022\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAn overseas pre-teaching internship will afford Tech students the chance to gain these skills. It also will provide them with critical teaching and classroom management experience. Students can register with the Global Internship Program, receive recognition of the internship on their transcript, have access to advising and support throughout the process (before, during, and after the internship).
