{"52398":{"#nid":"52398","#data":{"type":"event","title":"CSE Seminar: James Nagy, Emory University","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp class=\u0022MsoPlainText\u0022\u003EJames Nagy\u003Cbr \/\u003EProfessor, Mathematics and Computer Science Department, Emory University\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp class=\u0022MsoPlainText\u0022\u003EFor more information please contact Dr. George Biros at \u003Ca href=\u0022mailto:gbiros@cc.gatech.edu\u0022\u003Egbiros@cc.gatech.edu\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp class=\u0022MsoPlainText\u0022\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp class=\u0022MsoPlainText\u0022\u003E\u0022Efficient Iterative Methods for Large Scale Inverse Problems\u0022\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp class=\u0022MsoPlainText\u0022\u003EAbstract:\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp class=\u0022MsoPlainText\u0022\u003EIll-posed problems arise in many image processing applications, including microscopy, medicine and astronomy.\u00a0 Iterative methods are typically recommended for these large scale problems, but they can be difficult to use in practice.\u00a0 In this talk we describe a hybrid approach that combines the Golub-Kahan bidiagonalization algorithm with Tikhonov regularization and a weighted generalized cross validation scheme.\u00a0 We also show how this method can be used as an effective scheme for choosing regularization parameters for certain nonlinear inverse problem.\u00a0 Applications from image processing illustrate the effectiveness of the resulting numerical schemes.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp class=\u0022MsoPlainText\u0022\u003EThis is joint work with Julianne Chung, University of Maryland.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp class=\u0022MsoPlainText\u0022\u003EBio:\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp class=\u0022MsoPlainText\u0022\u003EJames Nagy is a Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Emory University.\u00a0 He received his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from North Carolina State University in 1991.\u00a0 Before joining Emory University in 1999 he had postdoctoral research fellowships with the IMA at the University of Minnesota, with the NSF at the University of Maryland, and was on the faculty at Southern Methodist University.\u00a0 He is on the editorial boards of SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing (SISC), SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications (SIMAX), and the SIAM Book Series \u0022Fundamentals of Algorithms\u0022.\u00a0 His research interests include numerical linear algebra, structured matrix computations, and numerical solution of inverse problems in image processing.
