{"52573":{"#nid":"52573","#data":{"type":"event","title":"CSE Seminar: Alfred Park","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EComputational Science and Engineering\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EDate: Friday, February 6, 2009\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003ETime: 2:00pm-3:00pm\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003ELocation: Klaus 2447 \u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EFor more information please contact \u00a0Dr. Richard Fujimoto; \u003Ca href=\u0022mailto:fujimoto@cc.gatech.edu\u0022\u003Efujimoto@cc.gatech.edu\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003ETitle: \u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EParallel Discrete Event Simulation on Metacomputing Systems\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EAbstract:\u003Cbr \/\u003ERecent advances in distributed computing such as volunteer and desktop grid\u003Cbr \/\u003Ecomputing that aggregate loosely coupled resources have transformed the\u003Cbr \/\u003Eexecution of certain computational workloads that, in the past, were\u003Cbr \/\u003Ereserved for processing on dedicated clusters. \u00a0Parallel discrete event\u003Cbr \/\u003Esimulations have different requirements, such as time synchronization, than\u003Cbr \/\u003Eprograms that can exploit loosely coupled resources. \u00a0Consequently, these\u003Cbr \/\u003Ecodes are typically run on tightly coupled machines providing the best\u003Cbr \/\u003Eopportunity for maximum speedup. \u00a0However, these facilities may not be\u003Cbr \/\u003Ereadily available to many users.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EThis talk explores the merging of these distinct computational domains \u003Cbr \/\u003Einvolving the execution of parallel discrete event simulation across loosely \u003Cbr \/\u003Ecoupled resources. \u00a0A master\/worker architecture is proposed for parallel \u003Cbr \/\u003Ediscrete event simulation on metacomputing systems providing robust \u003Cbr \/\u003Eexecutions under a dynamic set of services with system-level support for \u003Cbr \/\u003Efault tolerance, semi-automated client-directed load balancing, portability \u003Cbr \/\u003Eacross heterogeneous machines, and the ability to run codes on idle or \u003Cbr \/\u003Etime-sharing clients without significant interaction by users. \u00a0Results indicate \u003Cbr \/\u003Ethat a master\/worker approach utilizing loosely coupled resources is a viable \u003Cbr \/\u003Emeans for high throughput parallel discrete event simulation by enhancing \u003Cbr \/\u003Eexisting computational capacity or providing alternate execution capability \u003Cbr \/\u003Efor less time-critical codes.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003E~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp class=\u0022MsoPlainText\u0022\u003EYou are cordially invited to attend a reception that will follow the seminar to chat informally with faculty and students.
