{"52655":{"#nid":"52655","#data":{"type":"event","title":"Imlay Distinguished Lecture: Ellen Zegura","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003E\u0022The Internet or Something Better\u0022\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EAbstract:\u003Cbr \/\u003EMy Georgia Tech colleague, Professor Michael Best, recently made a trip to Africa.\u00a0 Mike and others met with a group of chiefs of the Acholi people in Northern Uganda.\u00a0 This is an area that has suffered through profound conflict and lacks for essentially any communication technology.\u00a0 Mike and his team wanted to engage in participatory design to understand the communication needs and requirements.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EThey were very cautious not to influence the conversation towards modern communication technologies so they did not mention specific systems. But after about thirty minutes of this exercise one of the chiefs finally stated, \u0022We want the internet. Unless you have something better.\u0022\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EI have spent my career working on the Internet.\u00a0 Over the last nine months I have led the Network Science and Engineering Council charting an agenda for the what, how, when, and why of something better.\u00a0 In this talk I will discuss the problems, challenges and opportunities of a better Internet.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EBio:\u003Cbr \/\u003EEllen W.
