{"52658":{"#nid":"52658","#data":{"type":"event","title":"GVU Brown Bag: Beki Grinter","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003E\u0022Computing For, By and With Humanity\u0022\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EABSTRACT:\n\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003E\nAs increasingly sophisticated computing evolves to solve problems in\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nnew domains, so Human Computer Interaction (HCI), the science of making\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nInformation and Communication Technologies (ICTs) \u003Cem\u003Eusable\u003C\/em\u003E (easy for people to operate) and \u003Cem\u003Euseful\u003C\/em\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n(relevant to the situation of its use), faces new challenges.\u00a0One of\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nthese challenges focuses on the need to develop theories and methods\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nthat capture this evolving relationship between \u003Cem\u003Ecomputing and humanity.\u003C\/em\u003E\u00a0I break this relationship into two parts: how can we understand and improve the \u003Cem\u003Eproduction\u003C\/em\u003E of these increasingly sophisticated and complex computational artifacts, and how can we understand their \u003Cem\u003Econsumption\u003C\/em\u003E,\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nthe processes by which end-users adopt, customize, and reject these\u003Cbr \/\u003E\ntechnologies. It is not just production and consumption but the ongoing\u003Cbr \/\u003E\ninterplay between the two that is at the center of computing for, with,\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nand by humanity.\u00a0In this talk, I will describe how I came to Computing\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nfor Humanity, and what I think it might be. I will also offer two\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nthemes for Computing for Humanity research, a reconsideration of the\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nrelationship between local and global and an examination of values.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EBIO:\u003Cbr \/\u003E\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nRebecca E. Grinter (Beki) is an Associate Professor of Interactive\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nComputing in the College of Computing at the Georgia Institute of\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nTechnology. Her primary research interests lie at the intersection of\u003Cbr \/\u003E\ncomputing and humanity, exploring the human-centered problems of\u003Cbr \/\u003E\ntechnology production and consumption. Her research has been published\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nin Human Computer Interaction, Computer Supported Cooperative Work,\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nSoftware Engineering, Security, and Networking conferences.\u00a0Before\u003Cbr \/\u003E\njoining the faculty at Georgia Tech, she was a Member of Technical\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nStaff at Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies (and briefly AT\u0026amp;T\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nBell Laboratories), and a Member of Research Staff in the Computer\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nScience Laboratory of Xerox PARC. She holds a Ph.D. \u0026amp; M.S. in\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nInformation and Computer Science from the University of California,\u003Cbr \/\u003E\nIrvine, and a B.Sc.
