Parallel Simulation and Animation of Flows with the Lattice Boltzmann Method

The Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) is based on a discretization of the Boltzmann equation and results in a cellular automaton that is relatively simple, easy to extend, and to parallelize.

In the past few years, the LBM method has been established as an alternative method in computational fluid dynamics. Here, we will discuss an extension of the LBM to compute free surface flows. The basis of our study is an approach similar to volume-of-fluids method. In combination with appropriate boundary conditions, it is efficient and fully mass conserving. Results for parallel versions of the algorithm will be discussed together with extensions such as coupling to shallow water simulations.
