{"55380":{"#nid":"55380","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Students Work to Beautify Tech, Neighborhoods on Saturday","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EOn Saturday morning, Georgia Tech\nstudents, staff and faculty will work to spruce up campus, along with several\nneighboring communities. \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EMore than 50 projects\u2014involving\nspreading ground cover, planting projects, painting and trash clean-up\u2014will be\nunder way, as 700-plus volunteers participate in the annual Tech Beautification\nDay (TBD). Student volunteers plan, organize and facilitate TBD every year. \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThis whole project is overseen by\nstudents,\u0022\u0026nbsp;said Institute Horticulturist Donna Chronic.\u0026nbsp;\u201cCampus\nplanting beds have been prepped, and facilities will work with [project\nsupervisors] ahead of time to explain the projects and we\u2019ll have someone on\nsite for help, but TBD students will supervise anywhere from eight to 30\nstudents per project site.\u201d Facilities has procured three tractor trailers of\npine straw, which will make up the bulk of the projects. Some trees will be\nplanted, keeping with the Institute\u0027s Tree Campus USA status, but most of the\nprojects will be smaller in scope this year.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EVolunteers check in starting at 9\na.m. at the Campanile, and work begins at 10. Since projects such as laying sod\nare time-sensitive and must be completed, volunteers who finish up their\nprojects will be moved to those. Some new projects on campus this year include\ncleaning up the volleyball courts and a more focused Greek housing clean-up.\n\u201cWe extended an invitation for them to hold clean-up projects on their own\nyards,\u201d said fifth-year mechanical engineering major Mike Goodman, who is also\nvice president of Projects for TBD. \u201cWe\u2019ll provide the tools, and they\u2019ll get\npoints for Greek week.\u201d Prior to the event Goodman said roughly 15 houses had\nsigned up. \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EAccording to Goodman, more than\n1,250 spots around campus have been identified. \u201cThere\u2019s always something\npeople can do,\u201d he said. This is especially true since TBD organizers are going\noff-campus with their efforts. Both the Home Park and English Avenue\nneighborhoods will be the recipients of some Tech-powered sprucing up. \u201cWe\u2019re working\nwith the Home Park Community Improvement Association and an English Avenue\nchurch group,\u201d he said.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EMembers of the TBD Executive\nCommittee start planning the initiative in January.
