She teaches \u201cTheories of Urban Design,\u201d \u201cRetrofitting Suburbia\u201d and urban design studios.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EA leading authority on suburban redevelopment, she and June Williamson wrote \u003Cem\u003ERetrofitting Suburbia; Urban Design Solutions for Redesigning Suburbs\u003C\/em\u003E (Wiley \u0026amp; Sons, 2009, update in 2011, mandarin edition in 2013). The book documents successful retrofits of vacant big box stores, dead malls, aging office parks, etc., into more sustainable places. The book received the PROSE award from the American Association of Publishers as best architecture\/urban planning book of 2009, was featured in \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/content.time.com\/time\/specials\/packages\/article\/0,28804,1884779_1884782_1884756,00.html\u0022\u003E\u003Cem\u003ETime Magazine\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E\u003Cem\u003E\u2019s\u003C\/em\u003E March 23, 2009 cover story, \u201c10 ideas changing the world right now\u201d and is the subject of her \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/ellen_dunham_jones_retrofitting_suburbia?language=en\u0022\u003E2010 TED talk\u003C\/a\u003E and 2012 \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2012\/06\/15\/154805989\/why-do-the-suburbs-still-matter\u0022\u003ETED-NPR Radio Hour interview\u003C\/a\u003E. She appeared in the 2011 documentary \u003Cem\u003EUrbanized,\u003C\/em\u003E the 2012 PBS series \u201cDesigning Healthy Communities\u201d and was recently interviewed on \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.wnyc.org\/story\/heres-whats-becoming-of-americas-dead-shopping-malls\/\u0022\u003ENPR\u2019s Morning Edition\u003C\/a\u003E. She continues to build her database of suburban retrofits, lecture widely, and publish successful strategies for meeting 21\u003Csup\u003Est\u003C\/sup\u003E century challenges.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EEllen\u2019s published over 60 additional papers linking contemporary architectural theory and practice.
