His work examines architecture as a form of social activity situated within the intersecting spheres of politics, culture, and economy. Looking in particular at skyscrapers and stadiums, he focuses on the ways these structures are constructed, the ends to which they are used, and the nature of public reaction to them. His research has attracted recognition and funding from Columbia University\u2019s Buell Center for Architecture, Cornell University\u2019s John Nolen Fellowship, the Society of Architectural Historians, and the Hagley Museum and Library. His most recent book is\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.ashgate.com\/isbn\/9781409445753\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003E\u003Cem\u003EArchitecture in an Age of Uncertainty\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E (Ashgate Press, 2014). His first book,\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.upenn.edu\/pennpress\/book\/14661.html\u0022\u003ESkyscraper: The Politics and Power of Building New York City in the Twentieth Century\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/em\u003E (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2009), was named a 2010 Outstanding Academic Title in Architecture by \u003Cem\u003EChoice \u003C\/em\u003EMagazine. Other recent publications include \u0022Stadium Architecture, Visual Iconography, and the Shaping of Urban and Sporting Identities,\u0022 in \u003Cem\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.routledge.com\/books\/details\/9780415585071\/\u0022\u003EThe Visual in Sport\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/em\u003E (Routledge, 2011). He is currently completing a book on stadia around the world, \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.routledge.com\/books\/details\/9780415743662\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ESport and Architecture\u003C\/a\u003E (Routledge, expected 2015). He is the director of \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/stadialab.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EStadia Lab\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E Flowers was the College of Architecture\u0027s 2012 Georgia Power Professor of Excellence. In 2008 Flowers was awarded the Outstanding Teacher Award from the College of Architecture. Flowers received his Ph.D.\u0026nbsp; from the University of Minnesota and his B.A. from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT.
