55662 profile 1273744710 1440087500 <![CDATA[Tim Harrison]]> Timothy A. Harrison first taught at Georgia Tech in 1997. Until 2006, he was senior project architect at Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects, where he practiced for 11 years, working on projects from Massachusetts to California. His architectural studies have included the Harvard Design School, where he was a Jacob Javits Scholar, and the Syracuse University program in Florence, Italy, where he traveled with a Benenson Prize from the Duke University Art History Department. At Duke, Tim majored in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Structures, where he won top honors, and he minored in Art History with a concentration in Architectural History.  Outside of his work at Tech, Tim is a sole practitioner, and he is active in the care of his two young children and the community.  He volunteers as Facilities Director for the HEALing Community Health Clinic at the City of Refuge, a non-profit focusing on delivering quality healthcare and recuperative care to the indigent and the homeless, and he is the graphic editor for his neighborhood newsletter.

]]> Timothy Harrison’s current work stems from his experience as a practicing architect and designer, as well as his interest in the evolution of the profession.  As design instructor, he incorporates ethical issues into design thinking.  In the past this has taken the form of engaging students in “real world” client interactions, developing best practices in leadership and communication, conducting community charrettes, and engaging non-profits as clients.  This interest in ethics has also led to a deep questioning of sustainability as currently practiced, examining the history, theory, and philosophy of sustainable design, and using this questioning as a basis for the Critical Positions seminar in the graduate program.
