{"556801":{"#nid":"556801","#data":{"type":"news","title":"BBISS Researchers Tour Eco-Cities in China","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EIt would be no surprise to anyone to hear that China is well into a building boom.\u0026nbsp; The nation is very rapidly urbanizing due to its expanding manufacturing sector.\u0026nbsp; Large cities are being constructed from scratch where there once was open rural land.\u0026nbsp; It might surprise some that many of these will be eco-cities, designed and constructed with sustainable design features, materials, and infrastructure systems.\u0026nbsp; The speed and scale of these projects affords a rich opportunity for research and innovation towards a better understanding of what constitutes an \u0026ldquo;eco-city\u0026rdquo; in the real world.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EToward that end, a delegation from Georgia Tech recently participated in \u0026ldquo;The China-US Workshop on Environmental Protection and Urban Sustainable Development\u0026rdquo; in Tianjin.\u0026nbsp; It was co-organized by the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.nsfc.gov.cn\/english\/site_1\/index.html\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EChinese National Natural Science Foundation\u003C\/a\u003E and the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/\u0022\u003EU.S. NationalScience Foundation\u003C\/a\u003E and co-hosted by \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.tju.edu.cn\/english\/\u0022\u003ETianjinUniversity\u003C\/a\u003E and Georgia Institute of Technology.\u0026nbsp; The U.S. delegation of investigators are part of an NSF funded project from the Emerging Frontiers in Research and Innovation - Resilient and Sustainable Infrastructures (EFRI-RESIN) program called, \u0026ldquo;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/old.sustainability.gatech.edu\/sinews\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ESustainable Infrastructures for Energy and Water Supply (SINEWS)\u003C\/a\u003E.\u0026rdquo; \u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;The Chinese delegation is affiliated with the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/english.rcees.cas.cn\/\u0022\u003EResearchCenter for Eco-Environmental Sciences (RCEES)\u003C\/a\u003E at Tianjin University.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe workshop focused on the current status of the urban environment, its challenges, its future, and sustainable development strategies.\u0026nbsp; There were three technical areas of focus for this networking workshop:\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cul\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003E\u0026nbsp;water\/energy nexus\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003Eland use\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003Eecosystem services\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\u003C\/ul\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe goal of the workshop was to establish in-depth discussions and garner lessons from an international community of scholars about some of the key issues impacting the urban environment.\u0026nbsp; Consideration was also given to how the delegations could provide support for each other\u0026rsquo;s research and how government decision making could play a role in advancing the state of the art.
