55717profile12737609941470316887<![CDATA[Kathy Roper]]>Biosketch Kathy O. Roper is an associate professor in the School of Building Construction and serves as director of the Master of Science program's Integrated Facility Management track. She teaches graduate sustainable facility and property management, facility planning, project management, benchmarking, and corporate real estate. Roper is co-founder and co-editor of the new International Journal of Facility Management, launched in 2009. She is co-author of The Facility Management Handbook, third edition and writes regularly for other academic and professional journals and conferences.
Roper is an International Facility Management Association Certified Facility Manager and in 2007 was awarded an IFMA Fellow, the association’s highest recognition of service and lifetime achievement in the field. She is the 2011-12 Chair of the Board of Directors for IFMA. She serves on the Education, Research, and Strategic Plan Oversight Committees, and has chaired the Recognized Degree Programs Committee. She has been a member of the Atlanta Chapter Board of Directors for more than 13 years and served as President in 1997.
Roper is a U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED Accredited Professional and an appointed member of the USGBC Education Steering Committee. She also was an appointed member of the USGBC’s Formal Education Committee, for which she has served as co-chair.
She has served as a member of the Board for the Atlanta Chapter of CoreNet Global.
Roper is a Scientific Committee member for the CIB W70 Facilities Management working group, as well as the 2010 EuroFM Scientific Committee and Programme Advisory Committee. She is a founding member of the European Centre for Facilities Management and a founder for the International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction (CIB)-Endorsed Georgia Tech PhD Built Environment Research Chapter.

]]>Research Ambitions Evolving areas of facility management and growth of formal education in facility management internationally are key areas of research focus. Healthcare FM, sustainable FM, and distributed work to meet emergency preparedness, business continuity and pandemic readiness are current topical areas of new research development.
Research Groups/Labs Roper’s research has included the Steering Committee for National Science Foundation/ University of Alabama at Birmingham Housing and Building National Research Center of Egypt - International Sustainable Green Building Design and Construction conference 2008-2009; PI for development of an industry white paper on Strategic Facility Planning for IFMA; and PI for a three-year grant from the Atlanta Chapter of IFMA for work on development of the profession and expansion of career opportunities.
