  <title><![CDATA[Shemyakina Presents at United Nations University Responding to Crises Economics Development Conference]]></title>
  <body><![CDATA[<p>Olga Shemyakina, an associate professor in the Ivan Allen College&nbsp;<a href="http://www.econ.gatech.edu/">School of Economics</a>, presented during the United Nations University&rsquo;s &nbsp;development conference &ldquo;Responding to Crises&rdquo; in Helsinki on September 23.</p>

<p>Shemyakina presented during the session &ldquo;Gender Discrimination and Violence.&rdquo; Her talk focused on the impact of armed conflict on women and children. In addition, she discussed the effects of conflict on education, health, labor market outcomes, and well-being. She explored &nbsp;the differences in these for men and women.</p>

<p>The &ldquo;Responding to Crises&rdquo; conference was organized by the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER). The conference aims to improve knowledge about ongoing, unexpected, and future crises, and to discuss the options available for responses by governments, international agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), civil society, and private citizens.&nbsp;</p>
