In celebration of the milestone, the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/diversity.gatech.edu\/leadership-excellence-awards\u0022\u003ELeadership Excellence Awards\u003C\/a\u003E were created to honor women faculty, staff, and alumnae who are excelling in leadership, collaboration, and innovation.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EFive Leadership Excellence Award winners were recognized at the Diversity Symposium Reception on Thursday, September 15, hosted by \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/diversity.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EInstitute Diversity\u003C\/a\u003E, the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/wst.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ECenter for the Study of Women, Science, and Technology\u003C\/a\u003E, \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.wie.gatech.edu\/home\u0022\u003EWomen in Engineering\u003C\/a\u003E, and the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.womenscenter.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EWomen\u2019s Resource Center\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThis year, the Leadership Excellence Awards were established to celebrate and recognize the outstanding contributions of women in the Georgia Tech community. Recognition opportunities are one of the impact areas of the recently announced \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/diversity.gatech.edu\/genderequityinitiatives\u0022\u003EGender Equity Initiatives\u003C\/a\u003E,\u201d said Archie Ervin, vice president of Institute Diversity.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThrough their work, award recipients are women leaders who have accomplished one or more of the following:\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EBuilt communities and raised the capacity of others to collectively advance the Institute\u2019s potential.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EEither had national or international impact, or if at the regional level, attracted wider recognition.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003ECreated needed institutions, initiatives, and\/or programs.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003ETransformed their chosen field and presented fundamental and influential research contributions.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAward recipients included:\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EMeltem Alemdar\u003C\/strong\u003E, assistant director and senior research scientist, Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics, and Computing (CEISMC)\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ESherry Farrugia\u003C\/strong\u003E, chief operations and strategy officer, Pediatric Technology Center\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EElizabeth Mynatt\u003C\/strong\u003E, executive director, Institute for People and Technology\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ESungmee Park\u003C\/strong\u003E, co-founder and CTO, Sarvint Technologies Inc.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EJacqueline J. Royster\u003C\/strong\u003E, dean and Ivan Allen Jr. Chair, Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cp\u003EMeltem Alemdar\u2019s research focuses on improving K-12 STEM education and evaluating K-12 STEM initiatives that target low-income and minority students. In 2009, she established CEISMC\u2019s Evaluation Group to provide research and evaluation support for projects across Georgia Tech, the Georgia Department of Education, other higher education institutions, and the greater Atlanta community.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn her role at the Pediatric Technology Center, Sherry Farrugia works to build and sustain public-private partnerships and manage Georgia Tech and Children\u2019s Healthcare of Atlanta\u2019s $20 million research portfolio. She also serves on multiple boards and was appointed to the Governor\u2019s Council for Child Welfare. Farrugia has 25 years\u2019 experience in the health information field, working in data analytics, data visualization, and clinical and financial outcomes.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn addition to her role at the Institute for People and Technology, Elizabeth Mynatt serves as a distinguished professor in the College of Computing and director of the Everyday Computing Lab. She is the chair of the Computing Community Consortium and a member of the\u0026nbsp;National Academies\u0026nbsp;Computer Science and Telecommunications Board.\u0026nbsp;Mynatt has been recognized as an Association for Computing Machinery Fellow and a member of the Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction Academy. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EWhile at Georgia Tech, Sungmee Park co-invented the world\u2019s first \u003Cem\u003EWearable Motherboard\u003C\/em\u003E\u2122, or \u201cSmart Shirt.\u201d She received the Jang Yeong-Sil Award from the Korean Ministry of Science and Technology for the development of HeaTex in 2008 and the Korean Prime Minister\u2019s New Growth Business Award in 2010. In 2011, Park was inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Engineering Alumni at Georgia Tech.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EJacqueline J. Royster\u2019s research explores the intersections of the history of rhetoric, feminist studies, and cultural studies with a primary interest in the connections between human and civil rights.
