Moving Up, Moving Out: Tips for Fall Housing Move-out

It’s hard to say goodbye, but the time has almost come.

Prepare for your move out of Tech by marking the following dates on your calendar and following these helpful tips and tricks.

Important Dates

Saturday, Dec. 17:

Students not living on campus during Spring 2017 must move all belongings out of their rooms by noon and check out with a staff member.

Sunday, Dec. 18:

Students who lived on campus this semester may switch to new Spring 2017 assignments. All Fall 2016 graduates must move out by noon.

Sunday, Jan 8:

Move-in day for new Spring 2017 students living in residence halls.

Jan. 1 – 13:

These are the final days to receive a room change for the Spring semester.

Students are allowed to remain on campus during semester or holiday breaks; however, dining halls are not open during these times.

Tips and Tricks

1. Start early. If possible, start the moveout process this week. You probably won’t have time to pack during exams, but if you wait until the last moment to begin packing you will be overwhelmed and moving out will take longer than expected. Begin organizing items and recycling or donating things you know you won’t want to keep. If you’re living with roommates, separate your belongings from theirs. Return or sell back textbooks. Start cleaning out the fridge or pantry.

2. Find storage. If you’re looking to store items near campus, look into a local self-storage facility. (Campus Carriers is the storage program endorsed by the Georgia Tech Department of Housing, but is only available during summer months.)

If shipping any items, the closest UPS Store is at at 541 10th Street NW. Don’t forget cardboard boxes and tape.

3. Donate and recycle. Instead of throwing out gently used clothing or leftover non-perishable food items, try donating them at a location near campus. Campus recycling drop-off locations will let you get rid of plastic bottles, mixed office paper, aluminum cans, glass, and clothing or household textiles.

Salvation Army

4. Don’t forget cleaning supplies. Be prepared for your room inspection by stocking up on items such as Windex, Pledge furniture cleaner, toilet cleaner, disinfectant wipes, a vacuum, a mop or broom, and a feather duster, rags, or paper towels. Be sure to bring plenty of garbage bags.

5. Stay organized. Before the moveout day, try to make a list of items that you plan to bring with you. Then you’re guaranteed to remember everything important, even in the rush of moving out.
