{"585115":{"#nid":"585115","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Georgia Tech Duo Dedicated to Growing Computer Science Education","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EPushing the needle forward on computer science education is essential if the United States is to keep pace with the rest of the world on producing skilled technology workers.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/people\/barbara-ericson\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EBarbara Ericson\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;and\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/people\/mark-guzdial\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EMark Guzdial\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E are taking up this challenge at the Georgia Institute of Technology.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ENot only have Ericson, director of computing education outreach, and Guzdial, a professor in the School of Interactive Computing, helped expand female and minority participation in Georgia, the duo are actively involved with growing computer science education in high school classrooms across the country.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/gacomputes.cc.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EGeorgia Computes!\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/em\u003E was the first initiative launched by Ericson, Guzdial, and others in an effort to increase the number of students interested in computer science. Rolled out in 2006, the initiative used summer camps, workshops, teacher professional development, lobbying efforts, and other tactics to grow the computing education pipeline in Georgia.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn spring of\u0026nbsp;2013, Ericson\u0026nbsp;created\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/ice-web.cc.gatech.edu\/ce21\/SRU4CS\/history.html#history-of-project-rise-up-4-cs\u0022\u003ERise Up 4 CS\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/em\u003E, a program that helps prepare underrepresented groups for the Advanced Placement (AP) Computer Science (CS) A class and exam. The program has since grown and expanded to Florida, Maryland, and other states.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESince the program started, a record number of underrepresented students pass the challenging AP CS A exam each year in Georgia.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;While we can\u0026#39;t claim that the record number is all due to \u003Cem\u003ERise Up 4 CS\u003C\/em\u003E, several students have told us they wouldn\u0026#39;t have passed the exam without it,\u0026rdquo; said Ericson.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBuilding on the success of \u003Cem\u003ERise Up 4 CS\u003C\/em\u003E, in 2014 \u003Cem\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/ice-web.cc.gatech.edu\/ce21\/SRU4CS\/index.html\u0022\u003ESisters Rise Up\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/em\u003E was launched to specifically help young women succeed on the AP CS A exam.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn a recent interview with\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/blogs.edweek.org\/edweek\/curriculum\/2016\/11\/eight_states_have_fewer_than_10_girls_take_ap_computer_science_exam.html?cmp=eml-enl-eu-news3\u0022\u003EEducation Week\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/em\u003E, Ericson said that girls are often given mixed messages when it comes to computer science.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;The girls certainly get [the] message that \u0026lsquo;computer science is not necessarily for you. It\u0026#39;s for the guys\u0026rsquo;,\u0026quot; said Ericson.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003ESisters Rise Up\u003C\/em\u003E was founded specifically to counter any discouragement young women may encounter. Along with helping them to do well on the exam, the project also works to encourage more females to consider computing careers.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDespite the success so far, Ericson and Guzdial are continuing their work to increase access to computer science education for an ever-growing number of students. Along with\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/computinged.wordpress.com\/\u0022\u003EGuzdial\u0026rsquo;s blog\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;dedicated to advancing computing education and Ericson\u0026rsquo;s annual\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/news\/584765\/analysis-2016-ap-computer-science-testing-reveals-ongoing-need-qualified-high-school\u0022\u003Eanalysis of AP CS A exam results\u003C\/a\u003E, the couple (they\u0026rsquo;ve been married for 31\u0026nbsp;years) are also part of the leadership team for\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/expandingcomputing.cs.umass.edu\/\u0022\u003EExpanding Computing Education Pathways\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;(ECEP).\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;The primary goal for ECEP is to improve and expand participation in computing education state by state,\u0026rdquo; said Guzdial. \u0026ldquo;The program is currently in 16 states and in Puerto Rico, which recently held its\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/expandingcomputing.cs.umass.edu\/puerto-rico-holds-first-cs-all-symposium\u0022\u003Efirst-ever \u003Cem\u003ECS for All\u003C\/em\u003E symposium\u003C\/a\u003E.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe group recently held its annual summit in Washington, DC. Attending the two-day event were K-16 educators, researchers, and leaders from non-profit organizations, industry, and government. Guzdial led a panel discussion about the need for standards, certification, and direction at the state level in order to increase computer science participation for all students, particularly those from underrepresented groups.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;We\u0026rsquo;ve got to increase state-to-state coordination if we\u0026rsquo;re really going to make some headway in this effort,\u0026rdquo; said Guzdial. \u0026ldquo;Were starting to see some positive steps like South Carolina using a survey tool developed by Massachusetts, but there\u0026rsquo;s still an awful lot more to do.
