{"586570":{"#nid":"586570","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Larry Sweet Elected to Robotics Industries Association Board of Directors","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThe Robotics Industries Association (RIA) recently announced its new \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.robotics.org\/robotic-content.cfm?id=17\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003Eboard members\u003C\/a\u003E, including the Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Machine\u0026rsquo;s (IRIM) \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/robotics.gatech.edu\/team\/faculty\/sweet\u0022\u003ELarry Sweet\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAs the only academic on the board, Sweet joins 14 other members from industry\u0026mdash;composed of senior executives, integrators, and major end users\u0026mdash;and RIA\u0026rsquo;s President Jeff Burnstein.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFounded in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1974, RIA is the only trade group in North America organized specifically to serve the robotics industry\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESweet is the associate director of technology transition for IRIM and a professor of the practice in the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.ic.gatech.edu\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ESchool of Interactive Computing\u003C\/a\u003E. He leads the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.gtcarmlab.net\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ECollaborative \u0026amp; Advanced Robotic Manufacturing Lab\u003C\/a\u003E, a technology transition venture between Georgia Tech researchers and industry. The lab focuses on developing collaborative and advanced robotic manufacturing technologies with potential for successful industrial deployment.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\n\u0026ldquo;I am very pleased the RIA elected Larry to its advisory board. He will offer a wealth of knowledge to the organization,\u0026rdquo; said Magnus Egerstedt, the executive director of IRIM. \u0026ldquo;Larry has an extensive background in industry research; his election reflects highly on both his and IRIM\u0026rsquo;s reputation in the robotics community.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESweet came to Georgia Tech in fall 2015, after an extensive career in the robotics industry. He has held various executive positions, most recently as chief technology officer at Symbotic, where he led the conceptualization, design, and implementation of transformational warehouse automation technology.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDuring his time at Symbotic, Sweet was recognized for his achievements with numerous awards, including the 2013 Edison Award for Productivity and the 2015 Manufacturing Leadership Supply Chain High Achiever Award.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn accepting the position with RIA, Sweet outlined his main focus. \u0026ldquo;The next decade has the potential to see a significant increase in the deployment rate of robots\u0026mdash;not only those that co-locate but also truly collaborate with human workers\u0026mdash;across manufacturing, logistics, and service sectors.
