{"587099":{"#nid":"587099","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Team Hits Bull\u2019s Eye Winning Global Software Challenge","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EA team from the Georgia Institute of Technology recently earned the top prize in a global software development competition hosted by the Ministry of Science in South Korea.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ETeam \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/dartsim.github.io\/\u0022\u003EDART\u003C\/a\u003E \u0026ndash;\u0026nbsp;comprised of Associate Professor \u003Cstrong\u003EKaren Liu\u003C\/strong\u003E, robotics Ph.D. candidate \u003Cstrong\u003EMichael Grey\u003C\/strong\u003E and College of Computing alumnus \u003Cstrong\u003EJeongseok Lee\u003C\/strong\u003E \u0026ndash; took the grand prize in the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/ossaward.org\/eng\/m0101.do\u0022\u003EOpen Source Software (OSS) World Challenge 2016\u003C\/a\u003E for their entry, the Dynamic Animation and Robotics Toolkit (DART).\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe collaborative toolkit gives programmers an open source library of data structures and algorithms for kinematic and dynamic applications. It features multi-body dynamic simulator and kinematic tools for control and motion planning, which are used in part to help robots and computer animations remain oriented in their environments.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAccording to Liu, there were many existing open-source physics engines commonly used for generating animation in movies or video games. However, none of them could be easily adapted for robotics problems or applications.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;\u0026#39;Can we design the most intuitive yet extensible\u0026nbsp;interface for both naive and power users? What is the most useful set of functionality we should provide to facilitate researchers in robotics and computer graphics?\u0026rsquo; These are the questions we had in mind when we designed DART,\u0026quot; said Liu.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBeing an open source project has accelerated DART\u0026rsquo;s development.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;The \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.personalrobotics.ri.cmu.edu\/\u0022\u003EPersonal Robotics Lab at CMU\u003C\/a\u003E is also a major contributor to DART. We are also very grateful to many individual contributors that are making DART better on a daily basis,\u0026rdquo; said Liu.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EJudging for the OSS World Challenge is based on broad applicability, potential impact, novelty, and technical depth of the project submitted.
