{"590971":{"#nid":"590971","#data":{"type":"news","title":"BME Students Win Two Award Categories at Capstone Design Expo","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s Spring 2017 Capstone Design expo concluded last night at McCamish Pavilion.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe event showcased the inventions of 242 teams from 11 schools and three colleges with 1,222 graduating seniors participating from multiple disciplines.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ECapstone Design is a culminating course offered to undergraduate students in several disciplines at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Students work in teams to design, build, and test prototypes with real world applications. At the end of each semester, students showcase their efforts at this event. Teams display and pitch their inventions and marketability to a panel of judges, invited guests, media, and their peers, while competing for cash prizes and top honors.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAt this Capstone Design expo, biomedical engineering students received awards for the best interdisciplinary team and the top biomedical engineering team award.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe first award presented was for the interdisciplinary category which was won by \u003Cstrong\u003EThe X-Fives\u003C\/strong\u003E team. Their project centered around an X-ray machine positioning robotic arm; their team sponsor was Micro-C Imaging. The MICRA (Micro-C Robotic Arm) is ceiling mounted and holds, moves, and positions their sponsor\u0026#39;s x-ray machine. The MICRA allows a surgeon to take x-rays without needing the assistance of a technician and can then be retracted back into the ceiling\u0026mdash;reducing the amount of time and effort needed to take an x-ray during surgery.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe winning members on The X-Fives team are:\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\n\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E* \u003Cstrong\u003EAman Bedi\u003C\/strong\u003E, mechanical engineering (ME) from New Delhi, India\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E*\u003Cstrong\u003E Haoli Du\u003C\/strong\u003E, biomedical engineering (BME) from Atlanta, Georgia\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E*\u003Cstrong\u003E Dhara Patel\u003C\/strong\u003E, biomedical engineering (BME) from Alpharetta, Georgia\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E*\u003Cstrong\u003E Quynh Tran\u003C\/strong\u003E, mechanical engineering (ME) from Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E*\u003Cstrong\u003E Minh Tran\u003C\/strong\u003E, mechanical engineering (ME) from Vinh, Vietnam\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe top biomedical engineering team category winner was \u003Cstrong\u003EPediaTRACH\u003C\/strong\u003E. Their project description says, \u0026ldquo;Pediatric patients who need endotracheal tubes to breathe can suffer from problems due to misplacement of the tube. Due to this, it is industry standard to take daily x-rays to visualize tube placement.
