Questions to be explored, through our local work and the sessions with the other sites, include but are not limited to:\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cul\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EHow can data and new technological applications enhance community wellbeing?\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EBy what ethical standards should we judge these new applications?\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EFor which\u003Cem\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u0026lsquo;\u003C\/em\u003Ecommunities,\u0026rsquo; and at which scales, will so-called \u0026lsquo;smart\u0026rsquo; technology enhance community wellbeing?\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EAre the purported benefits of \u0026lsquo;smart\u0026rsquo; systems possible without technological sophistication?\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EHow does the meaning of \u0026lsquo;smart, connected communities\u0026rsquo; vary across different cultural and historical contexts?\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EWhat historical models exist for \u0026lsquo;smart, connected\u0026rsquo; communities?\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\u003C\/ul\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EOur local work in Atlanta will build especially on lessons learned from the SLS Smart Cities, Connected Communities Fellows program run in Spring 2017. Our specific goal for the conference is to lay out a plan for launching an SLS-supported\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003E\u0026ldquo;Data Science for Sustainable Communities\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EAction Group\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026nbsp;in Fall 2017 to support ongoing collaboration among faculty, staff, students, and partners to enhance and expand teaching, research, and action related to this theme. As such, this will be a working conference with a concrete deliverable.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ELike last year, we aim for a diversity of participants from on-campus (faculty, staff, students) and off-campus (partners from all sectors). Given its narrower scope this year, we anticipate a more intimate conference, really a workshop, of about 50-60 people.
