{"591078":{"#nid":"591078","#data":{"type":"news","title":"GT Computing Team Earns Best Student Paper Award","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003ERecognition of Georgia Tech in the fast-paced world of computer systems is continuing to grow.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThis week in Belgrade, Serbia a team from the School of Computer Science earned the best student paper award at the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/eurosys2017.org\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003E12\u003Csup\u003Eth\u003C\/sup\u003E European Conference on Computer Systems\u003C\/a\u003E (EuroSys17).\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EPresented by the conference\u0026rsquo;s program committee, the award recognizes work done by Ph.D. student \u003Cstrong\u003ESteffen Maass\u003C\/strong\u003E, postdoctoral fellow \u003Cstrong\u003EChangwoo Min\u003C\/strong\u003E, Ph.D. student \u003Cstrong\u003ESanidhya Kashyap\u003C\/strong\u003E, postdoctoral fellow \u003Cstrong\u003EWoonhak Kang\u003C\/strong\u003E, Ph.D. student \u003Cstrong\u003EMohan Kumar\u003C\/strong\u003E, and Assistant Professor \u003Cstrong\u003ETaesoo Kim\u003C\/strong\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ETheir paper titled, \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/dl.acm.org\/citation.cfm?id=3064191\u0022\u003E\u003Cem\u003EMosaic: Processing a Trillion-Edge Graph on a Single Machine\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E, details a new system for processing large-scale graphs that is demonstrated to be consistently faster than high-end distributed engines running across multiple computer clusters.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ETo achieve these results, the team coupled a novel approach to encoding graphs with fast storage media such as non-volatile memory express solid state drives (NVMe SSD) and massively parallel processors on a single machine. The team\u0026rsquo;s encoding method uses a new locality-optimizing, space-efficient graph representation that can be scaled up to meet larger computational needs.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;We envision this system to be a stepping stone toward systems which help to improve the performance and feasibility of large-scale processing for domains relying on graph processing, like machine learning,\u0026rdquo; said Maass.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;This should lead to researchers being able to run large-scale analysis on single machines rather than relying on more costly and complex cluster setups.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EA highlight of the team\u0026rsquo;s findings is that Mosaic can complete an iteration of \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/PageRank\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EGoogle\u0026rsquo;s PageRank algorithm\u003C\/a\u003E on a trillion-edge graph in just 21 minutes.
