LuminAI, an installation created by the Digital Media program’s ADAM Lab in the Ivan Allen College School of Literature, Media, and Communication, has been selected as a featured project at the inaugural Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Smithsonian Creativity and Innovation Festival, which will be held on October 13 - 15, 2017, in Washington, D.C.
The festival, a gathering of all institutions included in the Atlantic Coast Conference, will celebrate creativity and innovation with a specific focus on science, engineering, arts, and design, and will be held at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.
Brian Magerko, an associate professor in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication, leads the LuminAI project alongside a team of graduate and undergraduate students. LuminAI is an interactive art installation that features an artificially intelligent (AI) virtual dance partner that is projected onto a screen. The AI performer is a visually striking, anthropomorphic abstract figure made of particles of light.
The project is housed inside a 15-foot-tall geodesic dome and lined with custom-made projection panels for dome projection mapping. The surfaces allow people to watch their own shadowy avatar as it struts with the virtual dance partner, which learns how to dance by paying attention to which moves the current user (and everyone before them) is doing and when. The more dance moves it sees, the better and deeper the computer’s dance vocabulary. It then uses this vocabulary as a basis for future improvisation.
