Mars' volcanic regions are east of the canyon, so that was one surprise detailed in a new study from the team, which includes James Wray, assistant professor in the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. The other surprise? The Valles volcanoes' ages are estimated to be about 200-400 million years old, which is fairly young when you consider that the Red Planet's other volcanoes are estimated to be approximately 3.5 billion years old.
