North Avenue 'smart city' pilot project gets preliminary go-ahead

An Atlanta City Council committee gave the green light Wednesday for a demonstration project that will deploy smart technology along North Avenue to improve traffic flow and reduce vehicle accidents. The council's Transportation Committee unanimously approved a resolution authorizing an agreement between the city and the Georgia Tech Research Corp. committing up to $350,000 toward the $3 million project. Eighteen intersections along the North Avenue corridor between the Georgia Tech campus and Ponce City Market will be equipped with "smart" traffic signals that can be adjusted in real time to account for traffic conditions, said Faye DiMassimo, who is leading the project for the city. The street will be repaved and restriped to allow the placement of sensors, she said. "That can help us not only with congestion," she said. "It's really part of improving safety along this corridor."
