{"594447":{"#nid":"594447","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Strengthening Connections with Peking University","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThe \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.eas.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchool of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences\u003C\/a\u003E (EAS) hopes to establish a joint degree program with top Chinese research institution \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/english.pku.edu.cn\/\u0022\u003EPeking University\u003C\/a\u003E (PKU), which is why the school has hosted a workshop for PKU undergraduates for the past two summers.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EPKU has an advantage when it comes to making that joint degree program a reality: PKU Professor of Environmental Science \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/en.cese.pku.edu.cn\/index.php?action=viewteacher\u0026amp;id=20\u0022\u003EMei Zheng\u003C\/a\u003E worked\u0026nbsp;at Tech for 10 years before joining Peking University in\u0026nbsp;2010.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I will do whatever I can to help to make this degree program happen,\u0026rdquo; Zheng says. \u0026ldquo;When I have an opportunity to bring my students overseas, I think about Georgia Tech. I know the professors here, and I want my students to benefit from this experience.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ENine PKU students, all majors in environmental sciences\/engineering\/management, came to this year\u0026rsquo;s workshop. They visited Tech on July 25-Aug. 1 for classroom lectures and field research.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech faculty and senior researchers presented on topics related to air and water quality, energy and sustainability. The field research included a trip to an air quality monitoring site at Jefferson Street in Atlanta, which is a \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/\u0022\u003EU.S. Geological Survey\u003C\/a\u003E \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/my.usgs.gov\/gcmp\/program\/show\/943855\u0022\u003ESoutheastern Aerosol Research and Characterization (SEARCH)\u003C\/a\u003E network site. Georgia Tech researchers have set up equipment to monitor air quality for related studies. The goal was to expose the visiting students to Tech\u0026rsquo;s high-level research on air and water quality, atmospheric chemistry, and climate science.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe\u0026nbsp;PKU students got a chance to work with Georgia Tech professors along with graduate and undergraduate students, and they sampled Atlanta\u0026rsquo;s unique culture and cuisine.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThis workshop, says EAS Associate Professor \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.eas.gatech.edu\/people\/Nga_Lee_Ng\u0022\u003ENga Lee (Sally) Ng\u003C\/a\u003E and one of the workshop organizers, built on last year\u0026rsquo;s success. \u0026ldquo;The students last year were really enthusiastic, and we got good feedback,\u0026rdquo; Ng says. \u0026ldquo;They enjoyed their trip to Atlanta and they learned a lot, so we said we should keep doing this.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESecond-year PKU student Yanchu Ke was interested in learning how air pollution could be affecting China\u0026rsquo;s population and was thrilled at the chance to see how researchers study the effects of pollution.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAnother second-year PKU student, Xiang Chen, was impressed by the experience. \u0026ldquo;The professors here are very patient and enthusiastic,\u0026rdquo; he says. Coming to the workshop, he adds, gave him a chance to \u0026ldquo;learn about the American experience and the problems America had with air pollution.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EZheng says that many of the students were already aware of certain Georgia Tech professors, thanks to their research publications.\u0026nbsp; \u0026ldquo;Now they are very excited to meet these professors in person, who are very easy to talk with and very helpful,\u0026rdquo; she notes\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EZheng wants her students to know the hard work that awaits them if they decide to pursue graduate research. \u0026ldquo;I want them to see real life here as a graduate student, so they know the challenge,\u0026rdquo; Zheng says. \u0026ldquo;People might think graduate study is boring or scary or creates too much stress. When they see researchers enjoying their work, they say, \u0026lsquo;Okay, I could consider a Ph.D. degree in my future.\u0026rsquo;\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe passion of Tech\u0026rsquo;s EAS researchers for their work, Chen says, \u0026ldquo;motivates me the most. They have taught me that if you are really enthusiastic about the research, you can do it. But if you are not sure, it would be wise to think about it seriously.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ENg is also a professor in the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/chbe.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchool of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering\u003C\/a\u003E. Faculty and students from that school and the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.ce.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchool of Civil and Environmental Engineering\u003C\/a\u003E also participated in the workshop. EAS Professor and Chair \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.eas.gatech.edu\/people\/Greg_Huey\u0022\u003EGreg Huey\u003C\/a\u003E and EAS Faculty Support Coordinator \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.eas.gatech.edu\/people\/lawson-n\u0022\u003ENatasha Hackley-Lawson\u003C\/a\u003E co-organized the workshop.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.bme.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EWallace H.
