{"596144":{"#nid":"596144","#data":{"type":"news","title":"IC Faculty, Alumni Awarded with 10-Year Impact Award at Ubicomp 2017","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003ESchool of Interactive Computing faculty and alumni were among a group of five recognized for the 10-Year Impact Award at the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/ubicomp.org\/ubicomp2017\/\u0022\u003EACM International Joint Conference on Pervasive and Ubiquitous Computing\u003C\/a\u003E (Ubicomp 2017) for their paper titled \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/homes.cs.washington.edu\/~shwetak\/papers\/ubicomp2007_flick.pdf\u0022\u003E\u003Cem\u003EAt the Flick of a Switch: Detecting and Classifying Unique Electrical Events on the Residential Power Line\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe paper, which presented an approach that uses a single plug-in sensor to detect a variety of electrical events throughout the home, earned Best Paper and Best Presentation honors at Ubicomp 2007. This year, the paper was one of three awarded at Ubicomp 2017 for having outstanding influence over the past 10 years.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ECo-authors on the paper included current Georgia Tech Professor \u003Cstrong\u003EGregory Abowd\u003C\/strong\u003E, former Georgia Tech postdoctoral student and Research Scientist \u003Cstrong\u003EMatt Reynolds\u003C\/strong\u003E, alumni \u003Cstrong\u003EShwetak Patel\u003C\/strong\u003E and \u003Cstrong\u003EJulie Kientz\u003C\/strong\u003E, and \u003Cstrong\u003ETom Robertson\u003C\/strong\u003E, who worked in Abowd\u0026rsquo;s lab for two years around the time of publication.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch4\u003E\u25ba \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/public.tableau.com\/views\/Ubicomp-ISWC2017\/Dashboard1?:embed=y\u0026amp;:display_count=no\u0026amp;publish=yes\u0026amp;:showVizHome=no\u0022\u003EInteractive Graphic of Ubicomp\/ISWC 2017 Papers Program\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/h4\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch4\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/h4\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EReynolds, Patel, and Kientz now each hold faculty positions at the University of Washington.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ETo achieve desired results, the researchers applied machine learning techniques to recognize electrically noisy events such as turning on or off a particular light switch, a television set, or an electric stove. They tested their system in one home for several weeks and in five homes for one week each to evaluate the system performance over time in different types of houses. Results indicated that it is possible to learn and classify various electrical events with accuracies ranging from 85-90 percent.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe method has become known as Infrastructural Mediated Sensing, a concept developed and commercialized in a variety of subsequent ways by Patel and Reynolds.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EUbicomp 2017 took place earlier this month in conjunction with the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/iswc2017.semanticweb.org\/\u0022\u003EACM International Symposium on Wearable Computing\u003C\/a\u003E in Maui, Hawaii.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech received another notable accolade at the co-located ISWC 2017 conference, which shares a technical program with Ubicomp. The Jury Prize for Best Paper and Entry in the aesthetics category of the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/iswc.net\/iswc17\/program\/designexhibition.html\u0022\u003EDesign Exhibition\u003C\/a\u003E was awarded to \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.clintzeagler.com\/2017\/03\/12\/le-monstre-from-characters\/\u0022\u003ELe Monstr\u0026eacute;\u003C\/a\u003E, an interactive participatory performance costume developed by Ph.D. HCC student and research scientist \u003Cstrong\u003EClint Zeagler\u003C\/strong\u003E. The team also included IMTC research scientists \u003Cstrong\u003EScott Gilliland\u003C\/strong\u003E and \u003Cstrong\u003ELaura Levy\u003C\/strong\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThis year, Georgia Tech had 11 paper accepted at the conference.
