Orlando directs Georgia Tech\u0026#39;s \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/cstar.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ECenter for Space Technology and Research\u003C\/a\u003E, which is a co-host and co-sponsor of SSI.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EOrlando will present the\u0026nbsp;talk\u003Cstrong\u003E \u0026quot;REVEALS: Radiation Effects on Volatiles and Exploration of Lunar Surfaces\u0026quot;\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026nbsp;in the Space Science \u0026amp; Deep Space Missions Track at 4:25-4:45 PM.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAbstract:\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026nbsp;Recent space exploration missions have shown molecular volatile sources on several Solar System objects, including the Moon, Mars, Mercury, and near Earth asteroids (NEAs). Most of these low- to zero-atmosphere objects are currently under consideration by NASA as strategic destinations for future human exploration missions.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EEach of these potential destinations is constantly being bombarded by radiation from the solar wind and galactic cosmic rays, as well as by hypervelocity micrometeorite impacts. The interaction of ionizing radiation and micrometeorite impactors with regolith\/surfaces can store, alter, and even produce volatiles relevant for in situ resource utilization, e.g. water and methane.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EMore importantly, the constant radiation assault also poses obvious, life-threatening, and program-limiting health risks for humans that must be understood, quantified, and mitigated by the development of effective shielding materials, real-time radiation detection systems, and radiation-hardened human habitats and spacesuits.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Radiation Effects on Volatiles and Exploration of Asteroids and Lunar Surfaces (REVEALS) team is a new Solar System Exploration Virtual Research Institute (SSERVI) that will explore the fundamental, applied, and operational aspects correlated with radiation processing of natural regolith and man-made composite materials. The research focuses on:\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cul\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EUnderstanding the fundamental condensed-matter physics and radiation chemistry leading to volatile formation, sequestration and emission from the Moon, Martian moons (Phobos and Deimos) and NEAs\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EDeveloping and testing novel composite materials and real-time radiation detectors based on 2-D materials that will minimize risks and exposure during human exploration missions.\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\u003C\/ul\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAlso presenting at the Space Science \u0026amp; Deep Space Mission Track is\u003Cstrong\u003E \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.chbe.gatech.edu\/people\/martha-grover\u0022\u003EMartha Grover\u003C\/a\u003E,\u003C\/strong\u003E a professor in the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and one of the leading researchers in \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/astrobiology.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EGeorgia Tech\u0026#39;s burgeoning astrobiology community\u003C\/a\u003E. Grover will give the talk\u003Cstrong\u003E \u0026quot;A System-Level Viewpoint on the Chemical Origins of Life\u0026quot; \u003C\/strong\u003Eat 3:25-3:45 PM.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAbstract:\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003EIt may not be possible to uncover the chemical origins of life from a single chemical or physical event, that is, from a reductionist perspective. \u0026nbsp;In contrast, the concept of the prebiotic soup suggests a complex environment from which life emerged.\u0026nbsp;Moreover, a feedback loop might exist, in which the molecules associated with life\u0026rsquo;s emergence also acted on and modified their environment.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThis talk focuses on a model system for the origin of peptides, in which drying promotes polymerization and also drives monomer evaporation and phase separation.\u0026nbsp; These chemical reactions and mass transfer alter the pH and viscosity, which may further influence the polymerization kinetics.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFrom the School of Aerospace Engineering, Assistant Professor \u003Cstrong\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.ae.gatech.edu\/people\/brian-c-gunter\u0022\u003EBrian Gunter\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/strong\u003E will present the talk \u003Cstrong\u003E\u0026quot;The Ranging and Nanosatellite Guidance Experiment (RANGE).\u0026quot;\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAbstract:\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003EThe Ranging And Nanosatellite Guidance Experiment (RANGE) CubeSat mission, scheduled for launch in early 2018, involves two 1.5U cubesats flying in a leader-follower formation with the goal of improving the relative and absolute positioning capabilities of nanosatellites. The satellites\u0026rsquo; absolute positions will be tracked using GPS receivers synchronized with miniaturized atomic clocks, and will be validated using ground-based laser ranging measurements. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe relative position of the satellites will be measured using an on-board compact laser ranging system, which will also double as a low-rate optical communication system. The satellites will not have an active propulsion system, so the separation distance of the satellites will be controlled through differential drag techniques.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe results of the mission should serve to enable more advanced payloads and future mission concepts involving formations and constellations of nanosatellites.
