{"597491":{"#nid":"597491","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Pets at Tech","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EMany students find a source of peace, love, and support in animals.\u0026nbsp;Read more for three students\u0026#39; experiences with pets at Tech.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EEmily Farmer\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFourth-year, mechanical engineering major, Emily Farmer, came to Tech from Clarkesville, Georgia. After experiencing mental health illnesses during her first few years at Tech, Farmer chose to bring a support dog with her during the Spring 2017 semester.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFarmer said, \u0026ldquo;I took some time off school to focus on my health and when I decided to come back, I wanted to bring a support dog with me. I had to provide proof of my illnesses from a psychiatrist and a general practitioner as well as therapists giving their recommendation that I would benefit from having an animal on campus. Although the process took several months, I was eventually approved to have a dog in Georgia Tech housing.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFarmer now lives with Bonnibell, a two-year old corgi.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFarmer grew up with several dogs and a couple of cats at home. Initially, she didn\u0026rsquo;t plan to have an animal at Tech and said, \u0026ldquo;During my first few years here, support animals weren\u0026rsquo;t common on-campus. My mom suggested that I look into bringing a pet to school, so I began my research.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFarmer and Bonnibell have lived together for the last two semesters and have formed a steady routine. Farmer said, \u0026ldquo;Bonnibell wakes up and starts to whine for me to take her out at eight each morning, so we get up and go for a short walk after she eats her breakfast. Then she goes into her crate while I have classes, but when I come back we play outside and she burns off some of her energy. For the rest of the evening, Bonnibell keeps me company by napping and eating while I get my school work done.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFarmer loves having Bonnibell with her at Tech, but also recognizes that owning a pet is a full-time responsibility. She has found a pet beneficial to her college experience but warns that it may not be the right choice for everyone. Farmer said, \u0026ldquo;People often tell me that seeing Bonnibell makes their day but caring for an animal is a big commitment and students should really consider this when looking into support pets.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFarmer plans to live with Bonnibell for the rest of her time of Tech. She said, \u0026ldquo;I love having Bonnibell around. She\u0026rsquo;s sassy and can definitely have an attitude, but I like her being here.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EShannon Gerhard\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThird-year, industrial engineering and computer science double major, Shannon Gerhard, lives in Square on Fifth apartments with Molly, her five-year old cat.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGerhard said, \u0026ldquo;Molly was originally owned by my boyfriend but she came to live with me after my boyfriend\u0026rsquo;s father moved to an apartment without animals. I knew Molly for several years beforehand so her transition into my apartment went really smoothly.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGerhard did not plan to be a pet owner while at Tech but did grow up with pets in her home. She had a dog and three cats before college and was always a cat person. Luckily, Molly fit well with Gerhard\u0026rsquo;s lifestyle.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGerhard said, \u0026ldquo;I love having Molly with me at Tech - her random acts of love may be rare but they brighten my day. I enjoy spending time with her and I think we get along pretty well.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ERecently, Gerhard brought Molly on a five-hour road trip. Gerhard said, \u0026ldquo;Molly loved peering out the window and sitting in my lap. She was a little timid about using her litterbox in the car, but other than that the trip was perfect.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGerhard has been able to balance school life with her pet owning responsibilities. She said, \u0026ldquo;I make sure that I\u0026rsquo;m taking care of Molly\u0026rsquo;s needs. In the end, the relationship is mutually beneficial. Molly keeps me company and helps me relieve stress while I ensure that she\u0026rsquo;s healthy and happy.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EConnor Meeds\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESecond-year, mechanical engineering major, Connor Meeds, came to Tech from Groton, Massachusetts.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDuring his first year at Tech, Meeds experienced some mental health issues due to stressors that out of state students face during their transition from high school to college. Meeds attempted to get counseling on-campus, but found the most support in an unexpected resource \u0026ndash; a hamster named Molly.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EMeeds said, \u0026ldquo;Last year, I spent the day at a friend\u0026rsquo;s house and had the opportunity to meet his pet hamster. I was in a bad place at the time, but the hamster made me genuinely smile. I realized that a hamster might provide me some much-needed happiness, so I went to Petco and got the biggest hamster in the store.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EMeeds now lives in his fraternity house with Molly. Meeds said, \u0026ldquo;She\u0026rsquo;s a very caring hamster and has fit in well at the house. Everyone really loves her there.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ERecently, Molly has become the mascot for a larger organization, \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/mollys-co.com\/\u0022\u003EMolly\u0026rsquo;s Co.\u003C\/a\u003E Meeds started Molly\u0026rsquo;s Co. last summer as a \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/mollys_co\/\u0022\u003Ecomedic Instagram account\u003C\/a\u003E. He said, \u0026ldquo;I started taking pictures of Molly with her fans to capture the genuine smile that Molly invokes in people. After the semester ended, I went back to my hometown and wanted to make use of Molly\u0026rsquo;s followers. I started my own online shop, Molly\u0026rsquo;s Co., and promised to donate 20% of the proceeds to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAfter coming back to campus this fall, Meeds has promoted mental health awareness using Molly\u0026rsquo;s Co. as his platform. He said, \u0026ldquo;My team and I actively meet with students across campus to give them the chance to share their mental health related experiences and stories.\u0026rdquo; Pictures of these students are posted on the Molly\u0026rsquo;s Co. Instagram account with captions that reflect the students\u0026rsquo; stories.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ERecently, Meed\u0026rsquo;s sold Molly\u0026rsquo;s Co. stickers on Tech Green with 100% of profits donated to the Georgia Tech Counseling Center.
