{"602715":{"#nid":"602715","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Professor Amy Bruckman Joins Seven Other IC Faculty in CHI Academy","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003ESchool of Interactive Computing Professor \u003Cstrong\u003EAmy Bruckman\u003C\/strong\u003E can still remember the first paper she ever presented at the ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI).\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIt was in 2001 when she was early in her time as a faculty member at Georgia Tech. Co-authored with Jason Ellis, the paper was titled \u003Cem\u003EDesigning Palaver Tree Online: Supporting Social Roles in a Community of Oral History\u003C\/em\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ENow, 17 years later, Bruckman joins an ever-expanding list of Georgia Tech faculty that have earned entry into the CHI Academy. She was announced this month as a 2018 inductee into the prestigious group. She is one of eight who will be inducted this year, and she is the eighth Georgia Tech faculty member, all from the School of Interactive Computing, to join the group.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;It was such a big honor to have a single paper in CHI as a young researcher,\u0026rdquo; Bruckman said. \u0026ldquo;To be actually inducted into the CHI Academy is beyond words. All I can say is that I\u0026rsquo;m honored.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFellow IC Professors \u003Cstrong\u003EBeki Grinter\u003C\/strong\u003E and \u003Cstrong\u003EJim Foley\u003C\/strong\u003E provided a nomination for Bruckman to the CHI Academy. In it, they highlighted the depth and breadth of her research in content creation for educational purposes, social computing, and examination of the adoption of online social systems in countries like Cuba. A second sustained emphasis of her research, the nomination said, highlights the ethical issues that affect our community.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;In this, not only has she demonstrated research excellence, but also a commitment to serving SIGCHI,\u0026rdquo; they wrote.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EMore than her own induction, Bruckman noted what it means to have Georgia Tech continuously recognized for its commitment to the field of human-computer interaction.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech has seen new members join the CHI Academy in five of the past six years. Professor \u003Cstrong\u003EThad Starner\u003C\/strong\u003E was inducted in 2017, Professor \u003Cstrong\u003EJohn Stasko\u003C\/strong\u003E in 2016, Professor \u003Cstrong\u003EKeith Edwards\u003C\/strong\u003E in 2014, and Grinter in 2013. Before that recent run, Professors. \u003Cstrong\u003EGregory Abowd\u003C\/strong\u003E and \u003Cstrong\u003EBeth Mynatt\u003C\/strong\u003E were inducted in back-to-back years in 2008-09.
