These maps are large-scale physical artifacts, collaboratively-made, and meant for exhibition. The Atlanta Map Room builds upon the recent success of the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cocastl.org\/stlmaproom\u0022 rel=\u0022noopener noreferrer\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ESt. Louis Map Room\u003C\/a\u003E, a project lead by artist Jer Thorp in conjunction with the Center of Creative Arts.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EOur team is collaborating with Thorp to develop a unique iteration of the project in Atlanta, meant to explore invisible tensions in the city, between its rapid development as a commercial hub and its long history as a center for civil rights and culture in the Southeast. The overarching goal of the Atlanta Map Room is to investigate what it means to visualize civic dialog around data. How can the seemingly mundane details of property tax assessments, building permits, and community surveys become the source materials for acts of collaborative creative expression?\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EModerator:\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EYanni Loukissas is an Assistant Professor of Digital Media in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication at Georgia Tech, where he directs the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/loukissas.lmc.gatech.edu\/local-data-design-lab\/\u0022 rel=\u0022noopener noreferrer\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ELocal Data Design Lab\u003C\/a\u003E.\u0026nbsp;His research is focused on helping creative people think critically about the social implications of emerging technologies. He is also the author of\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/loukissas.lmc.gatech.edu\/uncategorized\/book-co-designers-cultures-of-computer-simulation-in-architecture\/\u0022 rel=\u0022noopener noreferrer\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003E\u003Cem\u003ECo-Designers: Cultures of Computer Simulation in Architecture\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E\u003Cem\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/em\u003E(Routledge, 2012) and a contributor to\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003ESimulation and its Discontents\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/em\u003E(MIT Press, 2009). Before coming to Georgia Tech, he was a lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, where he co-coordinated the Program in Art, Design and the Public Domain. He was also a principal at\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/metalabharvard.github.io\/\u0022 rel=\u0022noopener noreferrer\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EmetaLAB\u003C\/a\u003E, a research project of the Harvard Berkman Center for Internet and Society. He has taught at Cornell, MIT, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. Originally trained as an architect at Cornell, he subsequently attended MIT, where he received a Master of Science and a PhD in Design and Computation.
