Not only is social media integral to the research, pedagogy, and public identities of academics, online communication permits us to share thoughts, accomplishments, notifications (book publications, conference CFPs, syllabus questions) with colleagues across the globe. Yet, I am dissatisfied with my social media. Twitter can often be overwhelming, and in my experience it fails to foster engaged discussion. In fact, Theresa MacPhail complains of \u0026quot;Twitter\u0026#39;s brand of shallow scholarship\u0026quot; in her recent piece \u0026quot;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.chronicle.com\/article\/Why-I-Quit-Twitter\/242395\u0022\u003EWhy I Quit Twitter\u003C\/a\u003E.\u0026quot; Both personally and professionally I get the most out of Facebook. However,\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.chronicle.com\/blogs\/profhacker\/weekend-reading-cambridge-analyticafacebook-edition\/65250\u0022\u003Elike others at ProfHacker\u003C\/a\u003E, the recent revelations concerning Cambridge Analytica have spurred me to reconsider my relationship to this app.\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003EIs there another option for social engagement that aligns with the unique needs, interests, and skill sets of academics? Of course, numerous apps targeted to academic audiences have sprung up.\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/\u0022\u003EAcademia\u003C\/a\u003E,\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/\u0022\u003ELinkedIn\u003C\/a\u003E,\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.hastac.org\/\u0022\u003EHASTAC\u003C\/a\u003E, and\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/hcommons.org\/\u0022\u003EHumanities Commons\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;among others, all lobby to provide a forum for academics to socialize online.
