<![CDATA[Graduate Students Participate in SHOT Conference]]>
Alice Clifton authored a constitutional amendment for the Society for the History of Technology (SHOT) that passed its final vote at the society's annual meeting this last weekend. The amendment allows a graduate student, elected by their peers, to serve as a member of SHOT's Executive Council with full voting privileges. She will serve on SHOT's Executive Council in this capacity until 2020, when the term of an elected graduate representative can begin.
In addition, as co-chair of SHOT's Early Career Interest Group, Alice also organized or co-organized several events for the annual meeting, including the presidential roundtable "The Future of SHOT: Gateways to the Next 60 Years," on which she served as a panelist; a panel on professionalization and employment; two graduate student presentation workshops; the interest group's business meeting; and a mixer for early career scholars.
Other HSOC grad students were active at the annual meeting as well:
- Xincheng Shen presented (at the grad student workshop) "Meandering Shortcut: Transplanting Water System in Colonial Shanghai and the Dual Reality of Technological Globalism"
- Ling-Ming Huang presented "Creating Hybridity in the Design and Construction of the Taipei Metro"
- Mario Bianchini presented "From Sports Field to Factory: Sport as Techno- logical Consciousness in East Germany" and participated in a session of Graduate Students’ Flash Talks
