{"612852":{"#nid":"612852","#data":{"type":"news","title":"DCL Seminar Series: Jean Bernard Lasserre","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAbstract:\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Generalized Moment problem is an\u0026nbsp; infinite-dimensional LP which takes one line to state in compact form, and whose\u0026nbsp; list of potential important applications is almost endless. However, in full generality\u0026nbsp; the GMP\u0026nbsp; is not solvable. On the other hand, if its data consist of polynomials (or more generally semi-algebraic functions) and semi-algebraic sets then one is able to define a systematic numerical scheme, the Moment-SOS hierarchy, to approximate its optimal value as closely as desired. (One has to solve a sequence of semidefinite-relaxations of increasing size.) It was initially designed for solving global optimization problem and in this context finite convergence of the hierarchy is \u0026laquo;\u0026nbsp;generic\u0026nbsp;\u0026raquo; and global minimizers can be extracted.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EI will describe the Moment-SOS approach and shows\u0026nbsp; how it can be applied to help solve several problems outside optimization, e.g. in computational geometry, probability \u0026amp; statistics, control \u0026amp; optimal control, as well as analysis of certain non-linear PDEs.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EBio:\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EJB Lasserre graduated from \u0026quot;Ecole Nationale Superieure d\u0026#39;Informatique et Mathematiques Appliquees\u0026quot;\u0026nbsp;\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\n\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www-ensimag.imag.fr\/\u0022\u003E(ENSIMAG\u003C\/a\u003E) in Grenoble (France),\u0026nbsp; and got his\u0026nbsp;PhD\u0026nbsp;(1978) and \u0026quot;Doctorat d\u0026#39;Etat\u0026quot; (1984) degrees\u0026nbsp;\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\nboth from\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.ups-tlse.fr\/\u0022\u003EPaul Sabatier University\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;in\u0026nbsp; Toulouse (France). He has been at\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.laas.fr\/\u0022\u003ELAAS-CNRS\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;in Toulouse\u0026nbsp;\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\nsince1980, wherehe is currently Directeur de Recherche. he is also a member of\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.math.ups-tlse.fr\/\u0022\u003EIMT\u003C\/a\u003E,\u0026nbsp;\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\nthe Institute of Mathematics of Toulouse.
