Assistant Professor Kosal spoke on 28 June at the "Synthetic Biology and Nanobiotechnology Risk and Response Assessment" workshop at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. Kosal spoke on the application of nanotechnology for defensive countermeasures to biological warfare agents and bioterrorist attacks in her invited talk, "Nanotechnology for Biological Defense: Detection, Protection, Decontamination, and Medical Countermeasures." The meeting was hosted by the Biological Weapons Convention Implementation Support Unit (BWC-ISU) and the UN Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) and sponsored by the European Commission.

The series of risk workshops in which Prof Kosal participated aimed to scan the horizon for developments in the technology fields of synthetic biology and Nanobiotechnology that – dependent on their current or future ease of use and access – may lead to potentially dangerous capabilities at the disposal of groups or individuals that intentionally want to cause harm to society.
