{"614832":{"#nid":"614832","#data":{"type":"news","title":"2018 ACO Prize Goes to Chun-Hung Liu","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThe Georgia Tech \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.aco.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EAlgorithms, Combinatorics, and Optimization Program (ACO)\u003C\/a\u003E has selected \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.math.tamu.edu\/~chliu\/\u0022\u003EChun-Hung Liu\u003C\/a\u003E to receive the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.aco.gatech.edu\/news\/chun-hung-liu-wins-2018-aco-outstanding-student-prize\u0022\u003E2018 ACO Outstanding Student Prize.\u003C\/a\u003E The award recognizes academic excellence in the areas represented by ACO.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ELiu\u0026rsquo;s selection is based on two major accomplishments. First, he did breakthrough research as a Ph.D. student by resolving the Robertson conjecture\u0026nbsp;for topological minors,\u0026nbsp;namely\u0026nbsp;that graphs that do not have a Robertson chain of fixed length as a topological minor are well-quasi-ordered.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESecond, Liu developed and refined parts of the classical\u0026nbsp;Robertson-Seymour theory, discovering\u0026nbsp;entirely new methods alongside. In addition, he is honored for displaying an exemplary attitude\u0026nbsp;toward research and scholarship.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ELiu received B.S. and M.S. degrees in mathematics from the National Taiwan University, in Taiwan. After completing the Georgia Tech Ph.D. program in Algorithms, Combinatorics, and Optimization in 2014, he joined Princeton University as an instructor. In 2018, he moved to Texas A\u0026amp;M University as an assistant professor of mathematics.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cblockquote\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003E\u0026ldquo;I am very grateful to Prof. Thomas for his constant support and encouragement during my life at Georgia Tech. His professionalism, passion, and leadership undoubtedly shaped my development.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\u003C\/blockquote\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESchool of Mathematics Professor \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/people.math.gatech.edu\/~thomas\/\u0022\u003ERobin Thomas\u003C\/a\u003E was Liu\u0026rsquo;s supervisor at Georgia Tech. Thomas recalls Liu as \u0026ldquo;a very strong student,\u0026rdquo; passing the comprehensive examination early and then writing four strong papers in quick succession. This achievement earned Liu the school\u0026rsquo;s Top Graduate Student Award while only in his second year.\u0026nbsp; \u0026ldquo;I expect he will become a regular invitee to Graph Theory meetings in Oberwolfach, Banff, and elsewhere,\u0026rdquo; Thomas says.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ELiu says he \u0026ldquo;deeply benefited\u0026rdquo; from ACO, which he describes as a \u0026ldquo;wonderful multidisciplinary program that integrates three fascinating\u0026nbsp;and active directions in an amazingly terrific way.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ELiu adds: \u0026ldquo;I am very grateful to Prof. Thomas for his constant support and encouragement during my life at Georgia Tech.
