As a fellow, Klein is awarded a monthly stipend that supports the ongoing work behind her project, Data by Design: An Interactive History of Data Visualization, 1786-1900.

This project traces the rise of modern data visualization techniques through five “data narratives,” which are chapter-length web-based texts that employ interactive visualizations in order to advance their claims. Overall, the project’s purpose is to challenge the commonly-held belief that visualization serves as a neutral method for the display of data.  

The fellowship is a joint effort between the National Endowment for the Humanities and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support individual scholars pursuing interpretive research projects that require digital expression and digital publication. To be eligible for this opportunity, an applicant’s project must be conceived as digital because the nature of the research and the topics being addressed require presentation beyond traditional print publication.

The fellowship started for Klein and her team of undergraduate and graduate LMC students in July 2018, and will continue through June 2019.
