But the international affairs major from Morganton, Georgia, is happy to have found both.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I definitely stumbled upon it,\u0026rdquo; said Kelley, who graduates this week and also earned minors in leadership studies and global development. The \u0026ldquo;stumbling upon\u0026rdquo; of Tech came at a nudge from her grandfather while applying to colleges. Kelley planned to study liberal arts and hadn\u0026rsquo;t considered Georgia Tech, but her grandfather\u0026rsquo;s thoughts stuck with her: \u0026ldquo;It\u0026rsquo;s in-state. It\u0026rsquo;s a good school. You should go to Tech.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHer maternal grandfather\u0026rsquo;s brother and cousin both went to Georgia Tech, and her paternal grandmother\u0026rsquo;s brother, John W. Crenshaw, was once director of the School of Biology \u0026mdash; so she had some knowledge of the Institute but no immediate family connection. What Kelley did know is that she wanted a challenging college experience.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I knew Tech would push me, and I would get a really good education out of it,\u0026rdquo; Kelley said.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHer interest in nonprofits was sparked during an introductory international affairs class.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;When I learned I could work in nonprofit management and help nonprofits be more effective and use their resources better, I found that really interesting,\u0026rdquo; she said.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EKelley\u0026rsquo;s first workplace exposure to nonprofits was with the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.rescue.org\/\u0022\u003EInternational Rescue Committee\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026rsquo;s Atlanta office, which serves nearly 4,000 refugees each year. She gained experience with nonprofit management and followed it up with a second stint with the organization, this time focusing on fundraising.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EShe built on that experience with an internship at the Roots and Wings Foundation, a community foundation in Budapest, Hungary, while studying abroad with the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.scheller.gatech.edu\/centers-initiatives\/ile\/study_abroad\/index.html\u0022\u003ELeadership for Social Good Study Abroad Program\u003C\/a\u003E this summer. In the fall, she worked as a special events intern with UNICEF USA, which serves as the fundraising arm for the global organization.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ENow, with graduation imminent, Kelley is looking forward to a fulltime gig as donor engagement specialist at the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/atlantamission.org\/\u0022\u003EAtlanta Mission\u003C\/a\u003E. She first learned about the Mission\u0026rsquo;s work while acting as service chair for her sorority, Alpha Delta Chi, and later helped select the Mission as their main philanthropic beneficiary.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWith each different experience, her enthusiasm for the work accomplished by nonprofits has been affirmed. Kelley loves the backend of operations \u0026mdash; what others might even call the boring parts.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Even the fundraising, the poring over spreadsheets, that has an impact in people\u0026rsquo;s lives,\u0026rdquo; she said. \u0026ldquo;The boring things have to happen for these programs to run, and you get to have an impact and make someone\u0026rsquo;s life better.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAs Commencement day approaches, Kelley is excited to share it with her family \u0026mdash; especially her grandfather.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;He\u0026rsquo;s the one who always pushed me in school, and we\u0026rsquo;re really close,\u0026rdquo; she said. \u0026ldquo;It will be cool for him to see all the things he poured into me culminating with graduation.\u0026rdquo; Kelley is also the first woman on her mother\u0026rsquo;s side of the family to be graduating from college.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAnd though she\u0026rsquo;ll still be living in Atlanta, she knows she will miss life at Tech.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;If you had told me five years ago that I would fall in love with this school so completely and that it would shape the rest of my life, I would have thought you were crazy,\u0026rdquo; she said. \u0026ldquo;I never dreamed I would learn so much here and become the person I am today because of the experiences and people here.
