Obikwelu is a Ph.D. student in the Georgia Tech School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE).\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe fellowship was created as a means to support underrepresented minority graduate students in technology and engineering. The Fellows are students who display research excellence, persistence, leadership, and service.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EObikwelu has been in the ECE doctoral program since 2016, where he is advised by A.P. Sakis Meliopoulos, who holds the Georgia Power Distinguished Professorship.\u0026nbsp;Prior to enrolling at Georgia Tech, Obikwelu held engineering positions at Xcel Energy, Pike Energy Solutions\/UC Synergistic, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL),\u0026nbsp;and Consumers Energy. He is a 2005 B.S.E.E. graduate of Wayne State University and a 2008 M.S.E.E. graduate of Michigan Technological University.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EObikwelu\u0026#39;s research focuses on using advanced\u0026nbsp;statistical methods and device modeling\u0026nbsp;to compensate for instrumentation\u0026nbsp;channel errors in instrument transformer devices, and\u0026nbsp;estimate primary or system-level quantities.\u0026nbsp;Through instrument transformers, electric\u0026nbsp;power system\u0026nbsp;operators and engineers essentially obtain scaled-down representations or replicas of what\u0026#39;s happening at the high-voltage system-level (in terms of voltages, via voltage transformers,\u0026nbsp;and electric\u0026nbsp;currents,\u0026nbsp;via current transformers). These scaled down replicas are typically\u0026nbsp;used by\u0026nbsp;system protection and monitoring devices.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EUnder certain undesirable\u0026nbsp;system conditions, a\u0026nbsp;current transformer may become \u0026quot;overwhelmed\u0026quot; and\u0026nbsp;lose its ability to reliably scale down and correctly\u0026nbsp;reproduce system-level electric\u0026nbsp;currents at the connected\u0026nbsp;device-level. This could pose significant reliability issues for power system protection and power\u0026nbsp;system\u0026nbsp;monitoring, potentially\u0026nbsp;impacting local and\/or\u0026nbsp;Wide-Area Monitoring\u0026nbsp;(WAM) systems adversely.
