The event comprises presentations and talks by early-career scientists \u0026ndash; graduate students, undergraduates, and postdoctoral fellows \u0026ndash; working in the exciting fields of space and planetary science, engineering, and astrobiology across Georgia Tech and greater Atlanta.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EConfirmed Plenary Speakers\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDistinguished members of the global astrobiology community will deliver plenary lectures. Confirmed speakers include:\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/science.jpl.nasa.gov\/people\/Hand\/\u0022\u003EKevin Hand\u003C\/a\u003E \u003C\/strong\u003Eis a deputy project scientist at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He founded the nonprofit organization \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cosmoseducation.org.uk\/people\/ceus\/ceus.shtml\u0022 title=\u0022Cosmos Education\u0022\u003ECosmos Education\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;and was its president until 2007.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAs a planetary scientist and astrobiologist, his research focuses on numerical modeling, laboratory experiments, and instrument development to advance our understanding of the physics and chemistry of icy moons in the outer solar system. He is also interested in characterizing the connection between terrestrial cryosphere processes and the climate change record.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHe is currently involved in projects connected to NASA\u0026rsquo;s Europa mission which will conduct detailed investigation on whether the icy moon could harbor conditions suitable for life.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/isearch.asu.edu\/profile\/1731899\u0022\u003ESara Walker\u003C\/a\u003E \u003C\/strong\u003Eis an assistant professor in the School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University (ASU). She is deputy director of ASU\u0026rsquo;s \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/beyond.asu.edu\/\u0022\u003EBeyond Center for Fundamental Concepts in Science\u003C\/a\u003E, and associate director of the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/complexity.asu.edu\/asu-sfi\u0022\u003EASU-Santa Fe Institute Center for Biosocial Complex Systems\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EShe co-founded the astrobiology-themed social website \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/saganet.ning.com\/\u0022\u003ESAGANet\u003C\/a\u003E and is a member of the board of directors of \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.bmsis.org\/\u0022\u003EBlue Marble Space Institute of Science\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHer work centers on in the origin of life and how to find life on other worlds. She is most interested in\u0026nbsp;whether there are \u0026ldquo;laws of life\u0026rdquo; \u0026ndash; related to how information structures the physical world \u0026ndash; that could universally describe life here Earth and other planets.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EShe is active in public engagement in science, with appearances at the World Science Festival, the television series\u0026nbsp;\u0026ldquo;Through the Wormhole,\u0026rdquo; and the public radio program \u0026ldquo;Science Friday.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.ece.gatech.edu\/faculty-staff-directory\/paul-g-steffes\u0022\u003EPaul Steffes\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/strong\u003E is a professor in the Georgia Tech School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He performed his doctoral research at Stanford University, where he concentrated on microwave radio occultation experiments using the Voyager and Mariner spacecraft, with specific interest in microwave absorption in planetary atmospheres.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn 1982, he joined the faculty of Georgia. His research, focusing on microwave and millimeter-wave remote sensing and radio astronomy, has been sponsored by NASA, NSF, the SETI Institute, and industry.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHe has been involved with numerous NASA missions, including Pioneer-Venus, Magellan, the Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS), the High Resolution Microwave Survey (HRMS), and Juno (Jupiter Polar Orbiter).\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ERegistration and Abstract Submission \u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ERegistration for the 2019 Exploration and Origins Colloquium is open.
