It can be difficult for students to ask for help, and some may see it as stigmatizing or unnecessary to seek professional mental health services. This is why the Peer Coaching Program trains students to provide one-on-one support services to their peers and offers Peer Coaches ongoing supervision in the provision of these paraprofessional services. Peer Coaches are trained to help their consultees identify and address academic, social, or other concerns commonly faced by college students, including but not limited to:

• Adjustment to college/Tech.
• Academic struggles.
• Stress and anxiety.
• Relationship concerns.
• Career/major uncertainty.
• Grief and loss.

To become coaches, students must demonstrate qualities and characteristics such as strong leadership and social skills, good judgment, initiative, follow-through, and commitment. They must also successfully complete a comprehensive application process that includes a self-reflection essay and two recommendations from former supervisors, faculty, or staff.

Applications for Fall 2019 are currently open, and the deadline is April 5. The program is open to both undergraduate and graduate student applicants. Faculty and staff members are invited to encourage students to apply.

The Peer Coaching Program will host an Open House / Meet and Greet in the Counseling Center on March 8 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. More information is also available online at the program website.
