There are other visitation programs offered at the Georgia Institute of Technology, but the College’s Shadow Day is unique in that it offers a true experience of the liberal arts at Georgia Tech. Students attend classes, tour dining and housing facilities, learn about international experiences, and enjoy one-on-one interactions with Ivan Allen College students, professors, and Dean Jacqueline Royster.
“I am currently in the middle of my college search, and although Georgia Tech has been one of my preferred schools for some time, it wasn’t until I got the chance to experience Shadow Day that I became certain that it was my top choice,” said one prospective student from this year’s Shadow Day.
This is a common sentiment expressed by students considering enrollment in Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts. Shadow Day often serves as the tipping point for their decision.
According to Shadow Day director Elizabeth Miller, the dedicated participation of the College’s students and faculty made this year’s event particularly successful. Ivan Allen College faculty members opened their classrooms for active engagement with the prospective students, which helps them understand the learning experience here. Attendees were able to ask questions and candidly dialogue about the coursework and subjects taught.
“The Shadow Day committee often hears from attendees who say they ‘loved the whole process and the feeling of actually walking in a Tech student’s shoes,’” Miller said.
This event has proven so successful that the College has made Shadow Day an annual event since it was first created and produced in 2005.
